Responsibilities
- Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care to achieve optimal outcomes for patients of all ages.
- Completes age‑specific admission and ongoing assessments, documents them, and uses the data to develop a plan of care.
- Collaborates with the healthcare team, patients, and families to develop, implement, and evaluate age‑specific interdisciplinary plans of care.
- Revises the plan as patient status changes.
- Accurately administers treatments and medications and documents all actions in the electronic medical record.
- Identifies and incorporates patient/family educational needs into the plan of care and documents the interventions.
- Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance‑improvement activities.
- Acts as a patient advocate, protector of patient rights, and provider of psychological, social, and cultural support.
- Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
- Determines and performs within clinical, leadership, or education pathways to support evidence‑based patient care and performance improvement.
- Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
- Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption, and improve patient outcomes.
- Acts as a role model for clinical practice to coworkers, students, and physicians.
- Manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies the environment to meet patient care needs.
- Completes predetermined projects within specified timeframes and according to established guidelines.
- Uses problem‑solving methods to facilitate resolution of patient and personnel situations.
- Participates in the orientation of new employees.
- Provides feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
- Contributes to practice, environment, and work issues by participating on unit, hospital, or system activities.
- Assists with educational activities for the unit or department.
Qualifications
- Graduate of a professional nursing school from an accredited college or a graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
- Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
- Must possess AHA BLS‑HCP; may be required to obtain or maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, or NRP based on the specific work unit.
- Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).
