Unit CoordinatorUnit Coordination:Communication with customers, clinical staff, and ancillary staffCoordinate activity at nurse's stationAnswering phones, call lights, customer service with visitors and providersPaging staff as neededEmptying tube system and distributing itemsAssist charge nurse/team leader/manager as requestedClerical Functions:Provide clerical support to department and managementMaintain forms required for patient careOperate and perform simple maintenance on office equipmentPlace work orders for equipment if neededMonitor supplies and order when neededUpdate reference lists, phone lists, communication toolsMaintain supplies needed for downtimeMaintain patient education materials and bindersAssist with admission and discharge processElectronic Medical Record:Monitor and maintain paper portion of record"Push and Pull" patients from procedures and update patient location when off unitAssist with scanning of documents into EMRNotify physicians or physician offices of consult order and documentPrint lab labelsEnter pharmacy of choice in EMRInformation resourceSafety:Assist with creating and maintaining a safe environment in the departmentAppropriately reports and takes action on identified safety concernsPerform department duties as required, such as keeping unit, staff areas, and refrigerators clean and neatQuality:Assist with data collection and data entry for unit quality measuresAssists RN with EMR audits for documentation showing compliance with quality measures/charging and notifies nurse of deficienciesParticipate on department and/or hospital committees and performance improvement projects as appropriateUnit Description:This 41 private bed unit provides care for surgical/medical patients, with an emphasis on the post-operative patient and complex medical surgical patients. The staff on Surgical Medical Care Center (SMCC) provides care to a wide variety of patients including trauma patients, post-operative patients, genito-urinary procedures, head and neck cases, bariatric surgical procedures and multiple medical conditions. SMCC is recognized for its teamwork, and dedication to quality care and patient safety.

The unit also has a strong and engaged Healthy Work Environment team that celebrates staff and brings fun and positivity to the unit. SMCC has the 2nd highest PDP participation percentage in the Deaconess Health system and over half of the RN's hold their CMSRN certification. A unit nurse was recently awarded with the Daisy award for exceptional care of a surgical patient in 2025.
