This individual contributor position manages high‑complexity commercial claims with large exposures for a specific line of business, coordinating all claim resolution activities in accordance with company protocols and achieving quality and customer service standards.
Responsibilities
- Manage an inventory of highly complex commercial claims, verify coverage, conduct investigations, develop resolution strategies, and authorize disbursements within authority limits.
- Provide exceptional customer service by interacting professionally with insureds, claimants, and business partners, meeting quality and cycle‑time standards.
- Verify coverage and establish reserves by reviewing policy language, partnering with coverage counsel, estimating claim valuation, and following company protocols.
- Lead focused investigations to determine compensability, liability, and damages by gathering pertinent documents, taking recorded statements, and working with experts.
- Resolve claims through collaboration with internal and external partners, negotiating settlements, managing litigation, and authorizing payments within scope of authority.
- Establish and manage claim budgets by selecting resources, authorizing expenses, and delivering high‑quality service efficiently.
- Identify subrogation, salvage opportunities, and potential fraud, making referrals to Claim, Recovery, or SIU resources.
- Maintain compliance with state/local regulations, staying current on commercial insurance laws and trends.
- Mentor and train less experienced claim professionals.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the commercial insurance industry, products, policy language, and claim practices.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
- Analytical and investigative mindset with critical‑thinking skills and ability to make sound decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to negotiate complex settlements.
- Ability to manage multiple and shifting priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn business‑related software.
- Ability to value diverse opinions and ideas.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
- Minimum six years of relevant experience, preferably in claim handling.
- Must obtain and maintain an Insurance Adjuster License within 90 days of hire where applicable.
- Prior negotiation experience.
- Professional designations such as CPCU are preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $72,000 to $141,000 annually in District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Washington.
