Position Overview

This position is located in the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), West Region Arizona Engineering Team. The incumbent serves as area, zone or state engineer and is responsible for providing technical guidance and leadership in the overall planning, design, installation, and maintenance of the engineering phases of soil and water conservation practices as well as watershed flood protection programs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance and leadership in planning, design, installation, and maintenance of engineering phases of soil and water conservation practices.
  • Lead and manage watershed flood protection programs.
  • Formulate engineering planning, design, and construction of conservation practices that address natural resource protection.
  • Analyze and manage engineering workload.
  • Identify training needs of personnel and deliver training.

Eligibility and Basic Education Requirements

  • Job series: 0810–Civil Engineering, 0890–Agricultural Engineering.
  • Degree in Engineering from a program accredited by ABET or meeting ABET‑equivalent criteria, including differential and integral calculus and courses more advanced than first‑year physics and chemistry in at least five of the following seven areas:
    • Statics and dynamics
    • Strength of materials (stress–strain relationships)
    • Fluid mechanics and hydraulics
    • Thermodynamics
    • Electrical fields and circuits
    • Nature and properties of materials
    • Other comparable area (e.g., optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, electronics)
  • OR a combination of education and experience that furnishes a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering and a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of engineering sciences and techniques applicable to the branch of engineering.

Specialized Experience Requirement (GS‑12)

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS‑11 grade level in federal service or comparable experience not gained through federal service.

Professional Registration or Licensure

  • Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
  • Evidence of successfully passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or other written test required for professional registration.
