Clean-in-Place Process Engineer

Wilson, NC

W2 Contract: $70-77/hr


We are seeking a Process Engineer, Clean-in-Place (CIP) Systems to support the Large Molecule Drug Substance (LMDS) facility in Wilson, NC. This position will serve as the technical owner and subject matter expert (SME) for CIP systems utilized in biologics manufacturing operations. The engineer will provide technical leadership throughout design, construction, commissioning, qualification, startup, and operational readiness activities to ensure cleaning systems are reliable, compliant, and capable of supporting commercial manufacturing.

The successful candidate will collaborate cross-functionally with Process Engineering, Manufacturing, CQV, Automation, Quality, Facilities, and external engineering partners to deliver robust cleaning solutions that support cGMP operations and enable successful facility startup.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Process System Owner for CIP systems supporting biologics drug substance manufacturing operations.
  • Lead CIP system activities through design, installation, commissioning, qualification, startup, and operational handoff.
  • Provide technical oversight for CIP skids, distribution systems, process equipment interfaces, valve matrices, automation controls, and associated utility connections.
  • Review and approve P&IDs, design specifications, URS documents, equipment layouts, vendor submittals, FAT/SAT protocols, and turnover documentation.
  • Partner with process, manufacturing, and quality teams to develop CIP strategies that ensure product quality, equipment cleanliness, and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with automation teams to support CIP sequence development, recipe configuration, alarm management, and control strategy implementation.
  • Support development and execution of commissioning, qualification, and cleaning validation activities.
  • Participate in system walkdowns, punch-list resolution, startup planning, and operational readiness assessments.
  • Troubleshoot CIP performance issues and identify root causes related to cleaning effectiveness, flow rates, conductivity, temperature control, chemical delivery, and automation sequences.
  • Support change controls, deviations, CAPAs, and investigation activities associated with CIP systems.
  • Analyze system performance and identify opportunities for cycle-time reduction, water conservation, chemical optimization, and reliability improvements.
  • Work closely with manufacturing and maintenance teams to establish standard operating procedures, maintenance strategies, and long-term system ownership practices.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, cGMP expectations, site engineering standards, and industry best practices.
  • Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary project teams and external engineering contractors.


Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or related engineering discipline required.
  • Advanced degree or Professional Engineer (PE) certification preferred.


Experience

  • Minimum 5-10 years of engineering experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, biologics, or regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience supporting CIP system design, operation, startup, qualification, or lifecycle management.
  • Experience supporting greenfield or brownfield facility projects preferred.
  • Knowledge of biologics manufacturing equipment and cleaning processes.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, qualification, validation, and startup activities within GMP facilities.
