Position Overview

The Chuukese Video-Phone Interpreter is responsible for handling video and audio interpreting sessions on demand and rendering the meaning of conversations between Chuukese and English speakers across various industries, including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and emergency response. The interpreter processes information quickly, concisely, and recognizes sensitive cultural differences. Scripts may involve simple or complex technical or non-technical subjects. This position does not involve written translation; the interpreter provides verbal interpretation.

Essential Job Functions

  • Respond to video and audio interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner
  • Participate in online, video, and audio training sessions
  • Deliver interpretation services via video and expediently type data on a dedicated device (laptop, desktop, mobile phone, or tablet)
  • Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions
  • Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions
  • Maintain a professional demeanor throughout sessions
  • Remain calm during sessions even if speakers are incoherent or upset, especially in emergency situations such as 911 calls
  • Maintain punctuality and availability during scheduled work hours
  • Follow client instructions in compliance with protocol to avoid unintended interaction with the Limited English‑speaking Person (LEP)
  • Understand protocol and terminology for industries including medical, insurance, finance, and law
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and diversity
  • Manage highly emotional or stressful calls; remain on call for extended periods without breaks when necessary, maintaining company service standards

Qualifications

  • Fluency in Chuukese and English with cultural competency and regional accent adaptation
  • Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills for high accuracy
  • Ability to concentrate, remain detached, neutral, and objective during sensitive subjects (e.g., end‑of‑life, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, sexual orientation or gender expression)
  • Education or work experience in language‑related fields (teaching, assessment, translation, or interpretation) preferred
  • Ability to adapt to technology enhancements in service delivery
  • Minimum age 18 years
  • Authorized to work in the United States without future visa sponsorship (H1‑B, F‑1, TN, etc.)
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be able to read and write the requested languages (highly preferred)

Technical Requirements

  • Personal device for business use: Desktop or laptop (Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS); Tablet (iPadOS or Android); Smartphone (iOS or Android)
  • Restricted brands: Kaspersky products, Huawei hardware
  • High‑speed internet: download ≥ 5Mbps, upload ≥ 3Mbps, ping ≤ 300ms, jitter ≤ 30ms
  • Quiet space free from background noise or distraction

Physical Requirements

  • Operate keyboard, mouse, and webcam throughout most of the workday
  • Use headset for prolonged periods
  • Operate company software and systems for all job functions
  • Sufficient manual dexterity for typing or writing
  • Lift up to 26lbs
  • May be exposed to moderate noise levels from computer, audio, telephone
