Chief Technologist

Position Summary: Demonstrate proficiency in the performance of all diagnostic imaging. Must prepare or enter written documentation as required by the Department. Prepares all paper documentation for ACR, MQSA, and DOH inspections. In collaboration with the Director of Radiology, prepares staff schedules for approval by Director of Radiology, helps obtain coverage on first pass when vacation request are submitted, daily breaks obtained, orders supplies, etc. Responsibilities and duties may be added, changed or deleted at any time at the discretion of the VP Administration and/or Director of Radiology either verbally or in writing. Performs related duties in PACS, RIS and other computer software that the radiology department utilizes. Responsible for knowing and adhering to established hospital/department policies and procedures, including all aspects of safety. Maintain and exhibit behavior that promotes patient confidence and trust. Capable of working independently/unsupervised .

Job Duties & Essential Functions:

  • Knowledgeable in the New York State Department of Health’s/Suffolk County Department of Health Radiation Safety Codes, FDA MQSA, DOH, ACR regulations and policies.
  • Participates in County and State Health Department inspections.
  • Interacts with Radiation Health Physicists in testing and evaluating equipment testing, evaluation of collected data and evaluation of QC/QA/Rad Dose/PI for Radiology.
  • Will verify all quality control, quality assurance, adhering to NYS, DOH, JCAHO regulations/standards while maintaining all necessary records. Ensure compliance with all regulatory accreditation and safety standards.
  • Maintains and participates in Department and Hospital continuous Quality Improvement Programs and Radiation Safety Program.
  • Coordinate staffing assignments, scheduling and department coverage to meet patient care needs.
  • Acts as a liaison between staff, radiologists, nursing and department leadership.
  • Manage equipment issues and documentation for DOH, MQSA, FDA inspections.
  • Uploading images and any other documentation/reports required onto the ACR website for accreditation.
  • Maintains and prints any reports required from mammo reporting system as necessary.
  • Inform department director of equipment failure and malfunction.
  • Monitors reports and PACS and any other computer systems that the hospital utilizes for compliance.
  • Assists in the management of patient flow, patient scheduling, data reconstruction and sending images to PACS for physician’s interpretation.
  • Performs a variety of technical procedures, which requires independent judgment with ingenuity and not requiring constant supervision.
  • Assumes responsibility for radiology workflow while maintaining and managing patient flow as required.
  • Adheres to the Hospital and Radiology Policy and Procedure Manuals.
  • Troubleshoot radiology equipment issues to ensure continued operation and compliance with manufacturer requirements. Communicate equipment failures or operational concerns to the physicist, department director, and other key stakeholders as needed.
  • Review vendor service reports to confirm radiology equipment is functioning properly and meets Department of Health (DOH) regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with the medical physicist to verify that all radiology equipment is safe and approved for clinical use.
  • Reviews service reports from vendors confirming that radiology equipment is operational within DOH standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including inventory management and the proper handling and storage of equipment and supplies.
  • Lead and support workflow improvement initiatives in collaboration with department leadership and management.
  • Update, maintain, and standardize departmental imaging protocols to ensure compliance with best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform general diagnostic radiography (X-ray) procedures in accordance with established policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Acts as the departmental superuser for all Health Information Management (HIM), Radiology Information System (RIS), and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) applications utilized by the hospital, providing expertise, troubleshooting, and staff support.
  • Coaches and re-educates technologist when needed.
  • Performs other related assigned tasks/projects as needed.

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • NYS DOH License Radiologic Technology.
  • Graduate from an accredited Radiology Technology Program.
  • ARRT (R).

Preferred Experience & Qualifications:

  • Hospital experience.

The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

  • This position may require prolonged periods of sitting, walking, heavy lifting, bending, pulling and/or positioning and transferring of patients.
  • Must be able to lift 100 up to lbs.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to see and read well.
  • Able to hear and listen to instructions.
  • Sufficient mobility and dexterity of both arms or mechanical substitutes to operate a stretcher, move patients and other equipment.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience.The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
