The Medford School District serves approximately 14,000 students across 361 square miles in Southern Oregons Rogue River Valley. The district includes 13 elementary schools, three middle schools, two comprehensive high schools, and four charter schools, offering a range of educational options. It also operates three Schools of Choice, including a K–8 outdoor school, an elementary school of the arts, and a project-based high school. Role Description
The Chief Operations Officer (COO) is a full-time, on-site role based in Medford, OR, responsible for leading and overseeing the districts operational functions. This role manages daily operations including facilities, transportation, nutrition services, safety, and other support services to ensure schools run efficiently and effectively. The COO collaborates with district leadership to align operational strategies with educational goals, develops and implements business and operational plans, and monitors performance metrics for continuous improvement. Day-to-day responsibilities include overseeing budgets and financial planning for operations, analyzing data to inform decisions, managing vendor and partner relationships, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and district policies. The COO leads and supports operations teams, fosters a culture of service and accountability, and communicates clearly with school leaders, staff, and community partners.
Qualifications
- Strong Operations Management skills, including experience overseeing complex systems, facilities, and support services in a large organization.
- Proficiency in Business Planning and strategic execution to align operational initiatives with district goals.
- Demonstrated Analytical Skills to interpret data, evaluate performance, and drive evidence-based decision-making.
- Experience in Finance and Budgeting, including developing, managing, and optimizing multi-site or district-level operational budgets.
- Leadership experience managing diverse teams, with the ability to build collaboration, accountability, and a service-oriented culture.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with administrators, staff, community members, and external partners.
- Knowledge of K–12 public education operations, regulations, and best practices is highly beneficial.
- Relevant bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in business, public administration, education leadership, or related field preferred.
- Proven experience in a senior operations or executive leadership role, ideally in education, public sector, or a similarly complex environment.
