Eaton is seeking a Chief Engineer - Power Electronics Control for its Power Electronics (PE) and Battery Centers of Excellence (CoE). The PE and Battery CoE accelerate Eaton’s growth by developing scalable, cost-effective, and manufacturable power electronics and battery system platforms and building blocks. These platforms and blocks, along with standardized design methodologies, can be adopted by multiple businesses (e.g., UPS, LV/MV Drives, Energy Storage), providing a foundation for rapid innovation.

Location & Travel

This position will be based in the Raleigh, NC area. Relocation assistance is available to Raleigh. Some domestic and international travel is expected (~10‑15%).

Compensation

The expected annual salary range for this role is $154,000 – $225,000. This position is also eligible for a variable incentive program. Please note the salary information shown above is a general guideline only; salaries are based on candidate skills, experience and qualifications as well as market and business considerations.

What You’ll Do

The Chief Engineer – Power Electronics Control will be responsible for developing, implementing, and validating control systems for a wide range of power conversion, energy systems and protection products. Additionally, they will drive the adoption of model‑based techniques during the New Product Introduction (NPI) process, including Model in the Loop (MIL) and Hardware in the Loop (HIL) methodologies for design and validation of new products within Eaton’s portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Lead power electronics and battery control and protection algorithms for electric motors, power converters and energy storage systems, taking full ownership of assigned tasks or projects.
  • Perform modeling and simulation for electric motors, power converters and battery control development.
  • Implement, test and troubleshoot control firmware.
  • Establish system and sub‑system level control requirements from functional specifications and application needs.
  • Plan and perform control algorithm and firmware development and validation on HIL and in‑lab environments.
  • Create technical reports and presentations.
  • Guide and nurture other control engineers to enhance their technical skills and experience.
  • Support the development of PE and Battery CoE strategy, direction and priorities.
  • Keep abreast of latest power electronics technologies and business trends, apply this knowledge to power conversion and protection, and identify new opportunities.
  • Promote engineering excellence within the PE and Battery CoE and BU teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 12 years of professional experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience developing and implementing control algorithms for electric motors, power converters or energy storage systems (including academic or research experience).
  • Minimum 10 years of experience with DSP, microcontrollers and standard peripheral components.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with HIL modeling development and testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience leading teams or projects from a technical perspective.
  • Strong background in digital control and electric motor/power converter/battery control techniques.
  • Experience developing and implementing control for electric motors, power converters and energy storage systems using auto‑code generation tools (e.g., Simulink Coder).
  • Knowledge of real‑time operating systems (RTOS) and digital signal processing.
  • Familiarity with power electronics or energy storage system hardware.
  • Working knowledge of HIL hardware and software.
  • Ability to quickly learn new skills, technical knowledge, products or industry.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with diverse cultural settings and global customers and team members.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering processes (e.g., DFMEA, 8D).
