Chemical Operator - Shift Lead

Pay: $30.00/hour

Schedule: Training on Day Shift, then transition to 2nd Shift (4:00 PM - 4:00 AM) on a rotating 2-2-3 schedule

Position Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Chemical Operator - Shift Lead to provide technical leadership and direction for a production team in a chemical manufacturing environment. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for coordinating daily shift activities, supporting production goals, mentoring operators, and serving as the primary point of contact for the shift. While this is not a supervisory position , the Shift Lead plays a critical role in driving safety, productivity, quality, and communication across the operation.

Key Responsibilities

Shift Lead Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead operator and primary point of contact for the assigned shift.

  • Coordinate daily production activities to ensure production schedules and operational goals are met.

  • Monitor shift performance and document production status for effective shift handoffs.

  • Provide guidance, coaching, and technical support to fellow operators.

  • Assist in training and onboarding new team members.

  • Communicate effectively with Production Management, Maintenance, Quality, and other departments.

  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Monitor employee performance and communicate concerns or opportunities for improvement to Production Management.

  • Ensure compliance with all company safety policies and operating procedures.

Chemical Operator Responsibilities

  • Safely operate chemical processing equipment following established operating procedures.

  • Monitor chemical reactions, process parameters, gauges, instrumentation, and control systems to maintain product quality and safe operating conditions.

  • Make process adjustments based on operating conditions, laboratory results, and production requirements.

  • Perform routine equipment inspections and identify mechanical issues, leaks, wear, or other maintenance concerns.

  • Record production data, operating conditions, material usage, and process information accurately in electronic and paper-based systems.

  • Operate packaging equipment to package finished products according to quality and labeling standards.

  • Maintain production areas in accordance with housekeeping, sanitation, cGMP, and safety requirements.

  • Prepare equipment for maintenance activities and issue safe work permits as required.

  • Conduct inspections of safety equipment, forklifts, and production equipment.

  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations following OSHA and company procedures.

  • Handle hazardous waste in accordance with environmental regulations and company policies.

  • Work collaboratively with operations, maintenance, quality, and engineering teams to optimize production performance.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • 5+ years of direct Chemical Operator experience in a manufacturing or chemical processing environment.

  • Previous experience serving as a lead operator, trainer, or informal team leader is highly preferred.

  • Strong understanding of chemical processing equipment and production operations.

  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong computer and mathematical skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality.

  • Stable work history with a strong attendance record.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.

  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, reaching, and working around industrial machinery.

  • Comfortable working in a chemical manufacturing environment with exposure to machinery, chemicals, fumes, and varying temperatures.
