Chamorro Interpreter

LanguageLine Solutions is hiring a remote Chamorro‑English Phone Interpreter as an independent contractor. The interpreter will provide on‑demand phone interpretation services between Chamorro and English speakers for a range of industry sectors including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911.

Position Overview

The Chamorro Telephone Interpreter handles interpreting sessions promptly and maintains a professional and courteous demeanor at all times. The role requires accurate rendering of concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, with an emphasis on cultural sensitivity and industry terminology. The interpreter works from a quiet, secure home office and must accommodate varying call volumes and emotional content.

Essential Job Functions

• Respond to interpreting sessions promptly and conduct interpretation professionally.
• Render correct concepts and meanings following established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
• Speak clearly in both languages, using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
• Maintain a professional demeanor throughout sessions, staying calm in emergency or stressful situations.
• Remain punctual and available during scheduled work hours.
• Follow client instructions in compliance with protocol, ensuring confidentiality and client expectations are met.
• Understand and use industry terminology for medical, insurance, finance, and law sectors.
• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and work effectively in a diverse environment.
• Handle calls that may be highly emotional or stressful, remaining on call for extended periods as required.
• Adapt to technology enhancements and meet client demands using LanguageLine Solutions software.

Qualifications

• Fluency in Chamorro and English; deep cultural competency and awareness of regional accent nuances.
• Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills for high‑accuracy interpretation.
• Ability to stay detached, neutral, and objective during sensitive conversations (e.g., end‑of‑life discussions, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, sexual orientation topics).
• Educational or professional background in language, teaching, assessment, translation, or interpretation is preferred.
• Minimum age 18 years.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States without requiring future visa sponsorship.
• High‑school diploma or equivalent.
• Proficiency in written Chamorro and English is highly preferred.

Technical Requirements

• Dedicated personal device (desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone) running Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, iPadOS, Android, or iOS.
• Reliable high‑speed Internet connection: minimum 5Mbps download, 3Mbps upload, ping <300ms, jitter <30ms.
• Quiet, distraction‑free workspace.
• Post‑offer background check and/or drug screen may be required.

Physical Requirements

• Operate keyboard and mouse comfortably; remain stationary in front of a computer for the majority of the workday.
• Manual dexterity sufficient for typing and possible writing.
• Ability to lift up to 26lbs.
• May be exposed to moderate noise levels (computer, audio, telephone).
