Chair, Department of Psychiatry

Job Summary

We are seeking the Chair of Psychiatry for the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine (UMKC SOM) and the Center for Behavioral Medicine (CBM). The Chair will be a visionary physician leader with exceptional experience in clinical, educational, and research domains, and high acumen in leadership, administration, and systems management. The Chair will report to the UMKC SOM Dean and the Executive Chief Clinical Officer at University Health.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for all aspects of the Department of Psychiatry, including clinical, educational, and research missions.
• Build on prior leadership successes and define the future culture of the Department.
• Oversee a diverse team of 23 Psychiatrists, 13 APPs (PA/APRN), 18 Psychologists and 26 residents (expanding to 32) across affiliated institutions and the community.
• Lead the expansion of inpatient psychiatric services, including the new 200‑bed psychiatric hospital and behavioral health emergency department.
• Guide research opportunities across behavioral health, traditional psychiatry, interventional psychiatry, and psychiatric educational research.
• Collaborate with community outreach programs such as group homes, drop‑in centers, street psychiatry, home visits, and correctional healthcare.
• Represent the Department in institutional and community affairs.

Qualifications

• Board certified psychiatrist with a track record of excellence in clinical practice.
• Experience in multi‑institutional management within an expanding clinical enterprise.
• Demonstrated leadership in faculty development, curriculum design, and research management.
• Ability to foster compassionate care and serve diverse patient populations.
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
• Rank of Associate or full Professor in the UMKC SOM or equivalent.
• Passion for education and innovation in research and scholarly work.
