Certified Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Trauma Hospitalist - FT

Job Overview

This role is part of a collaborative team involving residents, fellows, attendings, and staff who care for trauma patients on the organization’s hospital network. The position is performed under the supervision of the Medical Director or an approved staff physician and in partnership with PCCs, staff nurses, and discharge coordinators to plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Responsibilities also include primary and urgent medical management, emergency stabilization of critically ill patients, teaching of residents and medical students, staff development and education, patient education, and discharge planning.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, implement, and evaluate medical and nursing care for trauma patients.
• Provide primary and urgent medical management and emergency stabilization of all critically ill patients.
• Teach and mentor residents, medical students, and staff.
• Develop staff education programs.
• Educate patients and families regarding care and discharge planning.
• Maintain an attitude of inquiry toward medical practices and patient care outcomes and may contribute to research methodology.
• Ensure compliance with current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain immediate reporting of unethical or questionable conduct, patient/employee safety, privacy, or other compliance concerns.

Education and Experience

• Education Required: Master’s degree in nursing OR Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant medicine or Health Sciences, or graduation from an approved Physician Assistant Training Program.
• Work Experience Required: None. Preferred: 2 years’ related experience.

Certifications

• Nurse Practitioner
  • Current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of practice.
  • Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner or Acute Care Certified Nurse Practitioner.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) / Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association.
  • Eligible for prescriptive authority in the state of practice as outlined by the State Board of Nursing.
• Physician Assistant
  • License as a Physician Assistant in the state of practice, NCCPA certification.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) / Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association.
  • Eligible for prescriptive authority in the state of practice as outlined by the State Board of Medical Examiners.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of required job information.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to present information clearly and professionally.
• Proficiency with Windows-style applications and various role‑specific software packages.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Working knowledge of advanced practice provider policies and protocols at the department and campus/system levels.
• Reliable transportation and ability to travel between facilities.
• Flexibility to work a 24/7, weekend, holiday, and on‑call schedule.

Physical and Environmental Demands

Medium work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work. Must be able to stand for prolonged periods, stoop, bend, reach, and handle manual tasks. Routine exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue is expected. Potential occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous medications or waste.
