Overview

The employee is a member of a multidisciplinary team responsible for the evaluation and treatment of neurosurgery patients. The employee acts as a clinician, coordinator, consultant, educator, leader and researcher, utilizing advanced knowledge and clinical expertise.

Responsibilities

1. Provide and coordinate delivery of care for patients in the neurosurgery clinic with physicians and other health care professionals; assess and document patient and family needs; participate in planning, developing, organizing and evaluating neurosurgery programs for continuity of care.

2. Develop, implement and review medical and nursing protocols relating to neurosurgery patients from referring institutions; interpret assessment data to determine actual or potential problems; assist in formulating plans of care with physicians and other health care professionals.

3. Plan, implement and evaluate nursing interventions based on assessed needs; facilitate continuity of care through referrals, phone contact and follow-up letters with referring physicians.

4. Act as a patient and family advocate using the nursing process and problem-solving techniques; conduct rounds on hospitalized patients to ensure smooth transitions between hospital, home and outpatient care; respond appropriately in emergency situations.

5. Report actual or potential risk management situations using the hospital notification system; perform minor procedures in the clinic as instructed by the surgeon.

6. Education responsibilities include providing patient and family education based on diagnosed needs, teaching post-operative care, developing and evaluating patient educational materials related to neurosurgery, and participating in professional educational activities related to neurosurgery patients.

7. Contribute to research and quality improvement by applying scientific processes, participating in enrollment and maintenance of patients on designated research protocols, initiating nursing and interdisciplinary research, and contributing to the publication of approved findings.

8. Serve as a change agent by recommending practice innovations, applying total quality management to plan and implement change, acting as a consultant to nurses and other health care team members on complex patient-related problems, and providing telephone consultations regarding current neurosurgical health protocols.

9. Participate in the development of standards and policies regarding patient care; establish strategic direction for the division as part of a multidisciplinary team; uphold professional responsibilities and demonstrate effective communication.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program
2. Passing score on the national certifying exam
3. Licensure or eligible for licensure in the State of Illinois
4. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
