A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC), Comprehensive Cancer Control Branch (CCCB) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Research Project

This fellowship provides a master-level trainee an immersive practice-focused experience in population-based cancer prevention and control, combining applied learning with mentorship to explore ways to strengthen systems for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and program evaluation across comprehensive cancer prevention and control partnership initiatives.

You Will Train By Conducting Activities Related To The Planning, Implementation, And Evaluation Of Cancer Prevention And Control Partnership Initiatives With National, State, Tribal, Territorial, And Community-based Organizations. Activities Include

• Participating in the evaluation of cancer prevention and control partnership initiatives.
• Participating in the development and implementation of partnership plans.
• Gaining experience monitoring, documenting, and reporting accomplishments of partnership initiatives.
• Learning to preparing health communication materials for practice and scientific audiences.
• Participating in multidisciplinary discussions and professional meetings with partner organizations.

This educational opportunity is designed to complement your academic background and foster growth in areas aligned with CDC’s mission. You will not supervise staff, manage budgets, or act as a federal representative. Project assignments are appropriate for an education and training program and do not involve employment-related responsibilities.

Learning Objectives

• Identifying, assessing, and cultivating strategic partnerships aligned with organizational goals.
• Designing and implementing a public health program evaluation using quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods.
• Reporting evaluation results using data visualization techniques.
• Creating strategic plans using stakeholder engagement methods.
• Preparing materials and publications for practice and science audiences using health communication and science communication best practices.
• Train on efforts that foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and programmatic synergies among internal and external partners.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date

September 13, 2026. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length

The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation

The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend

Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

ORISE Information

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred Skills

• Educational training and professional experience are helpful in public health program development, implementation and evaluation, strategic planning, health communication strategies and products, systematic literature reviews, data analysis, data interpretation and visualization, scientific writing and communication.
