Carpenter
The Carpenter is responsible for the fabrication, repair, and restoration of historic windows, doors, and millwork in our wood shop. This role requires hands-on experience in trim work, router operation, sash and door construction, and period-accurate woodworking techniques.
Responsibilities:
- Fabricate and assemble window sashes with precision, using router and trim work techniques to match historical profiles.
- Construct and fit historic-style doors from raw materials, ensuring proper joinery and period-accurate detailing.
- Build screen frames and assemblies that integrate seamlessly with existing window and door units.
- Fabricate and install storm window and door units to protect historic structures while preserving their architectural character.
- Perform restoration repairs including rail replacements, joint repairs, and component rebuilding to extend the life of historic millwork.
- Mill custom siding profiles and trim pieces to match existing historic details, operating machinery with accuracy and safety.
- Cut, fit, and install window stops and parting beads to original specifications using router and trim work techniques.
- Perform routine upkeep, calibration, and minor repairs on shop machinery including routers, table saws, molders, and other woodworking equipment.
- Keep the wood shop organized and clean, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment at all times.
- Proactively communicate material and supply needs to prevent project delays.
- Adheres to and promotes all company safety procedures to maintain a safe working environment for all team members.
- Participates in ongoing training and continuing education in historic restoration techniques.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on carpentry experience, preferably in millwork, window/door fabrication, or historic restoration.
- Proficiency with routers, table saws, molders, and standard hand tools.
- Experience in trim work and finish carpentry. Sash and door construction is a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, shop blueprints, or work orders.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work to close tolerances.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites as required.
Physical Requirements:
Requires prolonged standing, lifting up to 80 lbs, and exposure to varying temperatures, dust, wood particles, loud machinery, and other shop conditions; PPE required.
