Job Summary

Service Line Medical Director for Interventional and Structural Heart will provide accountable clinical executive leadership for cardiovascular services across UnityPoint Health. The role is based in Des Moines, IA.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical and Service Quality Performance (70%)
    • Establish strong working relationships with service line physicians (employed and independent partners) and other providers through regular meetings and site visits.
    • Lead physicians, APPs, and other health care providers to reduce clinical and operational variation and develop high‑reliability care standards.
    • Champion adoption of high‑reliability standards with regional and subspecialty leadership.
    • Develop and review performance dashboards, monitor clinical outcomes, and implement action plans to optimize results.
    • Manage performance of physicians and APPs, proactively fostering culture and addressing concerns.
  • Education & Training Development (10%)
    • Represent cardiovascular specialties within the system and with independent partners.
    • Build clinical, fellowship, and research programs as appropriate.
    • Establish and lead standardization of clinical protocols, policies, and procedures.
    • Ensure adherence to established protocols, policies, and procedures.
    • Disseminate information to physicians, APPs, and staff consistently.
    • Conduct regularly scheduled specialty division meetings to plan future activities.
    • Attend seminars and conferences to maintain current knowledge of national developments.
  • Clinical Program Development & Workforce Recruitment (10%)
    • Align service line physicians and APPs with strategic priorities and goals.
    • Partner with operations leaders to develop short‑term (1‑2 year) and long‑term (2‑5 year) strategic plans aligned with the UPH strategic plan.
    • Provide consulting for new programs, initiatives, and technology investments.
    • Participate in business plan development and stakeholder discussions.
    • Collaborate with operations leaders to achieve performance metrics and objectives.
    • Participate in workforce planning for physicians, APPs, and other providers.
    • Lead development of recruitment strategies and actively participate in the recruitment process.
  • Financial Management (10%)
    • Provide input into the management of the profit and loss of the assigned division.
    • Participate in strategic, operational, and capital discussions.
    • Develop and implement tactics to improve profitability of the service line.
    • Demonstrate UnityPoint Health values and safety guidelines.
    • Maintain current licenses and certifications required for the position.
    • Practice HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA, and other regulatory guidelines.
    • Complete all annual education and competency requirements.
    • Maintain compliance with federally funded program requirements and address concerns promptly.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO
  • Board eligible or board certified in Cardiology or a cardiovascular subspecialty
  • Fellowship trained in the applicable subspecialty for the service line
  • Unrestricted license to practice in the state of Iowa
  • Unrestricted state and federal authority to prescribe and administer medications as necessary
  • Advanced degree in healthcare management (MBA, MHA) preferred
  • Additional training in leadership (e.g., UPH Physician Leadership Academy) preferred
  • Practicing physician focusing on high‑quality, patient‑centric care, minimum 5 years experience
  • Minimum 3 years experience leading physicians, APPs, and other clinicians through change
