Cardiac Cath Lab Radiological Technician

Overview

Works under the direction of the Adult Cardiac Catheterization & Electrophysiology Unit Director to function as a member of the procedural team by assisting in the pre‑, intra‑, and post‑procedural care of patients undergoing Electrophysiology/Cardiac Catheterization, structural heart, and/or vascular procedures. Independently performs radiological duties during these procedures and troubleshoots as required. Works closely with the UCSF Radiation Safety Officer to monitor and maintain radiation protocols, and is responsible for radiation safety training of current staff and fellows.

Assists Cardiovascular Technologist IV with equipment maintenance in collaboration with the Biomedical Engineer and ensures an adequate supply of stock with Materials Management. Responsibilities include scrubbing‑in for the surgical portion of the procedure, circulating within the procedure room to organize and perform the non‑sterile portions, documenting on the GE Mac/Cardio lab systems, and operating radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment to produce the procedure images. The Cath/EP Technologist must work safely in an acute care setting and interact with anesthesia and other patient care departments. Willingness to train and interact with students and new hires is required.

Key Responsibilities

• Assists qualified physicians who have valid Fluoroscopy Certification in fluoroscopic Interventional Cardiac Catheterization & Electrophysiology procedures.
• Determines exposure factors based on patient height, weight, body portion involved, and required penetration depth.
• Processes images and reviews them for proper identification and quality control.
• Performs routine maintenance, diagnoses malfunctions, and makes minor repairs on radiologic equipment; arranges for repairs via CVT IV and Biomedical Engineering.
• Completes and maintains records, logs, and reports of work performed.
• Practices radiation protection techniques to minimize radiation to patients and staff.
• Assists with orientation of new hires and students as needed.
• Educates staff, fellows, and physicians regarding radiation safety, ALARA, and updates safety instruction quarterly at staff meetings and on poster boards.
• Adheres to department policies and procedures for technical and clinical operation; observes radiation safety regulations and manages Quality Indicators for Radiation Safety badges.
• Performs EKG tests according to department policy; prepares patients for procedures with shave/prep specific to EP/Cath/Vascular procedures.
• Correctly places electrodes, mapping patches, and patient monitoring equipment on patients for monitoring during procedures; pads and positions patients appropriately.
• Maintains current knowledge of Medical Center Code Blue procedures.
• Demonstrates professionalism and appropriate interaction with patients and staff.
• Correctly turns on and shuts down all equipment in rooms.
• Appropriately cares for patients undergoing interventional cardiology procedures and prepares them for transport to PACU following policy and procedure.
• Adheres to all applicable Medical Center and unit infection control policies.
• Participates in the collection and reporting of Quality Improvement data; assists in research projects as appropriate.
• Takes call in accordance with departmental policy after probationary period.
• Consults with departmental staff to ensure patient care issues and procedural requirements are met daily.
• Collaborates with Central Sterile Processing, Material Services, Imaging, Adult Echo Lab, Anesthesia Services, and other ancillary departments on daily outpatient/inpatient procedural care issues.
• Collaborates with Clinical Engineering staff on medical information system maintenance, service, cabling, and connectivity issues.
• Collaborates with Hospital IT Department or Department Programmer Analyst regarding Lab IT issues.
• Collaborates with Health System Radiation Safety resources to ensure a safe environment.
• Maintains Fluoro Quality Control.
• Responsible for Radiation Safety and radiation updates and staff education.
• Performs Radiation Annual Review and updates policies/guidelines for staff.
• Responsible for keeping the department survey ready for Joint Commission.
• Manages lead protection equipment, orders new lead and protective equipment, works with Radiation Safety on annual lead checks, and works with department leadership to maintain staff lead.

Shift Schedule

The position is scheduled to work three 12‑hour shifts per week and requires on‑call responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum two (2) years' Radiologic Technician experience in Cardiac Cath/EP labs or OR/Hybrid OR Interventional Radiology lab.
• Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
• Flexibility in scheduling with ability to rotate shifts and coverage for weekends and holidays.
• Willingness to participate in the call rotation as dictated by departmental needs.
• ARRT certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• RCIS
• ARRT VI or ARRT CI
• Experience with GE Maclab/Cardiolab
• Hybrid OR experience
• Previous work experience with Philips and/or Siemens Fluoroscopy equipment
• Previous work experience using personal computer applications
