Cardiac Cath Lab Radiological Technician

Job Description

Works under the direction of the Adult Cardiac Catheterization & Electrophysiology Unit Director to function as a member of the procedural team by assisting in the pre‑, intra‑, and post‑procedural care of patients undergoing Electrophysiology/Cardiac Catheterization, structural heart, and/or vascular procedures.
Independently performs radiological duties during these procedures and troubleshoots as required.
Works closely with the UCSF Radiation Safety Officer to monitor and maintain radiation protocols.
Responsible for radiation safety in the department, including radiation safety training of current staff and fellows.
Assists Cardiovascular Technologist IV with maintenance of equipment in collaboration with the Biomedical Engineer.
Also assists with ensuring the adequate supply of stock in collaboration with the Materials Management team members.
Responsibilities include scrubbing‑in for the surgical portion of the procedure, circulating within the procedure room to organize and perform the non‑sterile portions, documenting on the GE Mac/Cardio lab systems, and operating the radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment to produce the images of the procedure.
The Cath/EP Technologist must be able to work safely in an acute care setting and interact accordingly with anesthesia and other patient care departments who perform duties within the Cardiac Cath & EP environment.
Additionally, the Cath/EP Technologist must be willing to train and interact with students and new hires when necessary.
This position also requires participation in the call rotation, and willingness to orient and train in all areas of the department as needed.
The position is scheduled to work three 12‑hour shifts per week and is required to take on‑call responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Assist qualified physicians with fluoroscopic interventional cardiac catheterization & electrophysiology procedures.
• Determine exposure factors based on patient height, weight, body portion, and required penetration.
• Process images and review for proper identification and quality control.
• Perform routine maintenance, diagnose malfunctions, and make minor repairs on radiologic equipment; arrange for repairs with CVT IV and Biomedical Engineering.
• Complete and maintain records, logs, and reports of work performed.
• Practice radiation protection techniques to minimize exposure to patients and staff.
• Assist with orientation of new hires and students as needed.
• Educate staff, fellows, and physicians regarding radiation safety, ALARA principles, and safety updates; provide quarterly instruction at staff meetings and on poster boards.
• Adhere to policies and procedures for technical and clinical operation of the department; observe radiation safety regulations; manage the Quality Indicators for Radiation Safety badges.
• Perform EKG tests according to department policy and procedure; prepare patients for procedures by performing shave/prep specific for EP/Cath/Vascular procedures.
• Place electrodes, mapping patches, and patient monitoring equipment on patient for monitoring during EP/Cath/Vascular procedures; correctly pad and position patient.
• Maintain current knowledge of Medical Center Code Blue procedures.
• Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate interaction with patients and staff.
• Turn on and shut down all equipment in the procedure rooms.
• Provide appropriate care for patients undergoing interventional cardiology procedures; prepare patients for transport to PACU following policy and procedures.
• Maintain knowledge of and adhere to all applicable medical center and unit‑specific infection control policies.
• Participate in the collection and reporting of quality improvement data; assist in research projects as appropriate.
• Takes call in accordance with current departmental policy once the probationary period is completed.
• Consult with departmental staff to ensure patient care issues and procedural requirements are met on a daily basis.
• Collaborate with Central Sterile Processing, Material Services, Imaging, Adult Echo Lab, Anesthesia Services, and other ancillary departments in daily outpatient/inpatient procedural care issues.
• Collaborate with Clinical Engineering staff on clinical information system maintenance and service, cabling and connectivity issues.
• Collaborate with Hospital IT Department or Department Programmer Analyst regarding Lab IT issues.
• Collaborate with the Health System Radiation Safety resources to ensure a safe environment.
• Maintain Fluoroscopy Quality Control.
• Responsible for radiation safety and updates; conduct radiation annual review and update policies and guidelines for staff.
• Keep the department survey‑ready for Joint Commission inspections.
• Manage lead protection equipment; order new lead protective equipment; work with Radiation Safety on annual lead checks; work with department leadership to maintain staff lead safety.

Qualifications

• Minimum two (2) years of radiologic technician experience in cardiac cath/EP labs or OR/Hybrid OR interventional radiology lab.
• Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
• Flexibility in scheduling with ability to rotate shifts and cover weekends and holidays.
• Willingness to participate in the call rotation as dictated by departmental needs.
• ARRT certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• RCIS certification.
• ARRT VI or ARRT CI.
• Experience with GE Maclab/Cardiolab.
• Hybrid OR experience.
• Previous work experience with Phillips and/or Siemens fluoroscopy equipment.
• Previous work experience using personal computer applications.

Required Licenses/Certifications

• California Certified Radiologic Technologist License (CRT).
• American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT).
• California State Fluoroscopy Permit.
• American Heart Association BLS.
• American Heart Association ACLS.
