Located in the hills above the UC Berkeley campus, the Lawrence Hall of Science is a public science center that inspires and engages millions each year through science discovery and learning. It welcomes over 100,000 visitors per year to programs and events onsite and hundreds of thousands more in schools and other community settings across Northern California. The hall supports youth, communities, educators, leaders, and partners locally, nationally, and globally, and hosts the ‘ottoy Initiative, which fosters understanding of and respect for Ohlone people and culture and seeks to repair and improve UC Berkeley’s relationship with the Ohlone community.
Position Summary
In the role of General Manager of the ‘ammatka Kitchen, you will oversee all day‑to‑day operations of the kitchen and related culinary experiences designed to foster cultural understanding through food. Under the culinary direction of the ‘ottoy Initiative leaders, you will manage food production, service, customer interaction, human resources, and fiscal responsibility across multiple campus venues.
Responsibilities
- Food Production – Perform food service operations, including set‑up, breakdown, cleaning, and serving. Prepare and assist with menu items following recipes and policies, audit staff adherence to food safety and quality standards, manage kitchen cleanliness, resolve quality issues, merchandise food, and support functional units as needed.
- Customer Service – Maintain exceptional service standards during on‑site and off‑site events, anticipate and address customer needs, maintain positive client relationships, organize and manage special events, and ensure deadlines for service and schedules are met.
- Human Resource and Fiscal Management – Develop staffing schedules, manage labor costs, train and supervise staff, conduct performance management, ensure compliance with personnel policies and collective bargaining agreements, handle cash and payments, purchase supplies, conduct inventories, maintain equipment, and keep costs within budget.
- Other Duties – Perform additional tasks as needed, engage in professional development, and support the well‑being of the Lawrence Hall of Science and the ‘ottoy Initiative.
Required Qualifications
- Lead/supervisory experience in food service.
- Knowledge of food service and sanitation regulations.
- Experience ensuring safe and sanitary food service environments.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Customer service experience and ability to respond to requests.
- Multitasking, time‑management, and delegation skills.
- Experience coordinating multiple events simultaneously.
- Decision‑making, reasoning, and problem‑solving skills.
Availability
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
License/Certification
- Valid driver’s license with appropriate driving record or enrollment in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
- ServSafe Certification or equivalent.
- TIPS training.
Education
High school diploma and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with indigenous ingredients in food preparation.
- Experience cultivating cultural appreciation through culinary experiences.
- Knowledge of food sustainability and security.
- Experience in a public‑facing, cultural organization’s foodservice operation.
Salary & Benefits
Under California law, UC Berkeley provides a salary range of $80,000.00 - $105,000.00 for this role. This figure is for an exempt, monthly‑paid position. The position is a 1‑year, full‑time (40 hours/week) contract eligible for UC benefits.
