Branch Manager – Commerce City, CO
The Branch Manager role is key to the success of the overall branch. The manager is responsible for overseeing the overall operations, sales, and performance of the designated branch. The manager is expected to drive business growth, achieve sales targets, manage the branch’s financial performance, and ensure excellent service to our valued customers. Additionally, the Branch Manager will be responsible for leading and developing a team of employees while fostering a positive work environment and upholding Triple‑S Steel values and standards.
The Branch Manager will report directly to the Regional VP and will work in conjunction with the Sales, Purchasing, and Finance teams to establish and attain targets in Sales, Gross Profit, Inventory levels and inventory accuracy.
Responsibilities
- Safety of all employees – includes active participation in the Corporate Safety committee monthly meetings, collaborates with the Operations Manager and Regional Safety Manager on metrics to improve safety around the facility, and leads by example in ensuring the branch adheres to all health and safety regulations.
- HR and Performance evaluations – establishes clear performance appraisals, monitors progress, and provides regular feedback to team members; coordinates with HR manager to ensure compliance with company policies and relevant HR guidelines and laws.
- Business Development – regularly communicates and works with the VP Sales to identify and capture new accounts in both the geographic area and the area of the branch expertise.
- Sales – becomes proficient in the sales and quoting process and has knowledge of when the company must be competitive; helps maintain price book and communicates with the sales team.
- Quality – ensures plant and equipment is clean, maintained and organized by regularly walking the plant and communicating with employees; coordinates with VP of quality on metrics to improve quality.
- Productivity – ensures a productive workforce; uses relevant and consistent metrics to measure (e.g., financials, pick count, OT reports, production reports) as designed and directed by the Division Controller.
- P&L – responsible for the profitability of the branch and the productive and safe use of the branch assets.
- Credit – operates within the AMM for credit approval, including documenting rationale when exercising authority; coordinates with Credit Manager to nurture team credit decisions.
- Inventory – accountable to manage total inventory within the limits established by the General Manager; uses appropriate tools to forecast inventory levels and manage purchasing between branch and regional buyers.
- Expense management – in accordance with the annual financial plan and AAM, approves all expenses of the branch and uses prudence and good judgment while drawing upon corporate buying programs.
- Capex – operates within annual or special budget allocations; draws upon corporate buying programs and ensures good communication before approving large expenses.
- Profit Sharing Meetings – conducts quarterly profit‑sharing or town‑hall meetings, communicating branch performance and market conditions with employees.
- Best practices – adopts best practices with other branches to bring continuity throughout the organization.
- Leadership – has authority to hire personnel within the budgets adopted and approved by management; ensures company hiring policy is adhered to; has authority to terminate within the guidelines of the corporate HR department; works on training and development of all new staff.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Industrial Distribution, or Operations Management, or five years of progressive management experience in the Metals Distribution Industry – with focus on the structural/construction markets; MBA is preferred.
- Proven experience in a managerial role within the steel industry, preferably in sales or operations, is a plus.
- Financial management and budgeting skills are required.
- Strong knowledge of the steel market, industry trends, and customer needs.
- Business acumen and the ability to make data‑driven decisions.
Qualifications
Minimum of five years of progressive management experience in the steel industry, or equivalent educational background and experience.
Physical Requirements
- The physical demands include regular sitting, use of hands/fingers to handle or feel, talk or hear; occasional standing, walking and reaching; regular lifting of up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds.
- Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Working Conditions
- The work environment may include occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock within operations or laboratory areas.
- The noise level is usually moderate but may occasionally be high due to the open office environment.
