Position Overview
We are seeking a Building Management Systems (BMS) Application Engineer to join our team in Rochester, NY. In this role, you will bridge the gap between engineering estimates, field operations, and project execution by producing precise HVAC controls submittals, wiring schematics, and system documentation.
You will collaborate closely with Sales, Project Managers, and Field Technicians to deliver high-quality design packages, track modifications throughout the construction lifecycle, and produce accurate as-built drawings. Depending on your background, this position also offers opportunities to configure front-end databases, design custom UI/graphics, and support field commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Submittal Engineering: Review engineering estimates, mechanical plans, and project specifications to engineer complete submittal packages for commercial HVAC and temperature control systems.
- Control Drawing Creation: Generate detailed control schematics, network riser diagrams, point-to-point wiring diagrams, Bill of Materials (BOM), and valve/damper schedules.
- Lifecycle Drafting & As-Builts: Interface with Project Managers and field installers to incorporate redlines, track change orders, and deliver comprehensive as-built closeout documentation.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with sales estimators during pre-construction handoffs and provide technical support to field technicians and commissioning teams during installation.
- System Programming & Graphics (Experience Dependent): Assist in database generation, Direct Digital Control (DDC) sequence implementation, and interactive floorplan/equipment graphics development.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Building Automation, or equivalent technical trade education.
- Industry Experience: 3–5+ years of dedicated experience working with a commercial HVAC controls contractor or systems integrator.
- Engineering & Drafting Skills: Proven proficiency in generating temperature control submittal packages and CAD/Visio-based controls schematics.
- HVAC & DDC Fundamentals: Strong mechanical comprehension of HVAC systems (AHUs, central chiller/boiler plants, VAV systems) and standard sequences of operation.
- Drawing Management: Direct experience maintaining redline revisions and finalized as-built sets.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with Automated Logic (ALC) hardware, software, or the WebCTRL platform.
- Background in front-end BMS graphic development (3D floorplans, equipment dashboards).
- Experience with open communication protocols including BACnet (MS/TP & IP), Modbus, or LonWorks.
- Direct field experience supporting point-to-point checkout or functional commissioning.
