Billing SpecialistThe Salvation Army North and Central Illinois Division Harbor Light Center is seeking a Billing Specialist. This position reports to the Billing and Office Manager and is responsible for completing all billing tasks, assisting with the reception, and attending to telephone calls and secretarial duties.The outcomes of this position include coordinating the collection of data from all departments, submitting claims and following up with insurance companies, monitoring DASA and other funding bodies, and reporting any problems or discrepancies to the Director of Clinical Programs.Essential duties and responsibilities include preparing and submitting clean claims to various insurance companies, processing payments from insurance companies, completing pre-authorizations, entering all client data/transactions, occasional receptionist responsibilities, front office work, filing, checking DARTS and Medicaid status, and all other duties as assigned.This position will be evaluated on the effectiveness of achieving outcomes, timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.Education/experience required includes a high school diploma or GED equivalent, at least two years of experience in secretarial and office work with computer operation, and two years of experience in insurance billing.Competencies include a commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, ethical ability to work with confidential material, interpersonal style that is service oriented, skill in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner, flexible style, ability to work as a team member as well as independently, excellent attention to detail, communication and management style that exhibits the principals and values of the Army, demonstrated ability to manage projects, priorities, and programs in a constantly changing environment, knowledge of medical insurance billing practices, knowledge of basic medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices, knowledge of business office procedures, ability to operate a computer and basic office equipment, ability to operate a multi-line telephone system, ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees and the public, well organized and detail oriented, strong sense of integrity, competent in all basic computer programs, typing and filing, strong English grammar skills, ability to handle people with courtesy and mature judgment, and ability to work cooperatively with superiors and other employees.Position limitations include committing Salvation Army resources that have not been allocated or approved, keeping the Billing and Office Manager informed on all critical issues, and adhering to all Army policies and procedures.Physical demands include light physical work, use of standard office equipment and PC, ability to walk up two flights of stairs and lift up to 25lbs, working in an office environment with a low noise level, and working with clients that have poor social skills, suffer from mental illness, and have substance abuse problems.The Salvation Army mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.The Salvation Army offers a competitive benefit package for eligible employees which may include medical, dental, vision, hearing, disability and life insurance, flexible spending accounts, 403(b) retirement accounts, a company-funded defined contribution (pension) plan and generous time off policies.The Salvation Army is an Equal Opportunity Employer Minority/Female/Veterans/Disabled.
