BCSO Detention Deputy – Transportation Department
Salary Range
$28.15 - $31.52 per hour
Responsibilities
- Transport arrestees and detainees to and from state prisons, holding cells, jails, courts, medical appointments, and hospitals.
- Assist Detention Officers with booking and supervision of detainees.
- Serve court orders and perform hospital guard duty.
- Support the transportation of IVCs to and from hospitals.
Essential Functions
- Transport detainees to and from the jail, county courthouse, holding cells, and doctor’s visits while ensuring care, custody, and control.
- Prepare paperwork, logs, and related documentation.
- Conduct searches of detainees to ensure safety of officers and the public.
- Participate in training sessions related to safety, security, firearms, and procedures.
- Work any post, assignment, or shift to support a 24-hour, 7-day per week operation, including nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as assigned.
- Maintain inclusive and respectful working relationships that support a sense of belonging for all employees and community members.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality and perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent and completion of the NC BLET Course.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of modern law enforcement practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of inmate management practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of local laws, ordinances, and the North Carolina General Statutes pertaining to the commitment and confinement of inmates.
- Ability to maintain discipline and order of inmates.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to maintain courteous and tactful relationships with families of inmates, attorneys, ministers, and other persons concerned with the welfare of individual inmates.
- Ability to take prompt and effective action during detention facility emergencies and exercise sound judgment to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action.
- Skill in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment.
