Band Technical AssistantReports To: Campus AdministrationCompensation Plan: Temp HireDate Revised: July 2022Maximum 20 hrs/weekDept./Campus: SMCISD Fine Arts:Band/San Marcos High SchoolPrimary Purpose: The Band Technical Assistant will assist the SMHS Band Directors with their instructional duties in regards to the Rattler Marching Band during the Fall semester.Qualifications:Education/Certification:High School DiplomaUIL RMA Portal Certificate of CompletionExperience:A background in high school marching band performanceA background in college marching band performanceExperience in high school marching band preferredExperience in college marching, drum corps, or color guard preferredSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Capacity to follow marching drill designAbility to evaluate student performance and assist in improving individual and group skillsStrong organizational skills, communication, and interpersonal skillsAbility to recognize mistakes in movement and sound and demonstrate methods of instruction to cause improvement through student understandingJob Description:Ensure communication with the Band Director and the other staff members to develop movement to meet the drill requirementsAttend all rehearsals and performances, instruct members in fundamental and advanced techniques as neededCreate rehearsal plans in cooperation with the Marching Band DirectorSchedule and conduct extra rehearsals for the unit, in addition to the scheduled marching band rehearsals as neededProvide technical instruction to students participating in SMCISD marching bandAssist the staff at extracurricular events, events (including but not limited to: football games, parades, and UIL activities)Work within schedules of band classes and before/after school schedules as assigned by the campus band directorFollow guidelines established by SMCISD as well as federal and state law pertaining to bandPlan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of studentsCommunicate with the band directors to insure coordination of instructionEstablish and maintain open communication with district staff, band directors, parents, and studentsMaintain professional relationships with district staff, colleagues, band directors, parents, and studentsCreate an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of studentsTake necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilitiesMaintain high expectations for the level of performance from band members during the warm-ups and give attention to individual membersMake sure the band is prepared/equipped for rehearsals and performancesMaintain a cooperative working relationship with other staffTools/Equipment Used: instruments, platforms, and audio equipmentPosture: Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting, etc.Motion: Repetitive hand/arm motions, frequent hand gripping, reaching, bending, etc.Lifting: Occasional light to medium lifting and carrying (less than 40 pounds)Environment: Frequent outdoor exposure, prolonged travelMental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; Work with frequent interruptions, ability to communicate; ability to instructMay not exceed 20 hours of work each weekMust clock in and out for hours workedThe foregoing statements describe the general purpose and responsibilities assigned to this job and are not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills that may be required.
