Felony Prosecutor

Under general direction, prosecutes felony offenses for Hays County. Individuals in this position serve at the pleasure of the current elected official.

Responsibilities include prosecuting felony and misdemeanor crimes, handling cases from intake through appeal, planning casework, conducting arraignment proceedings, reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, preparing trial exhibits, filing motions and briefs, negotiating pleas, selecting juries, preparing jury arguments, and trying cases. Other duties may include evaluating cases for grand jury presentation, conducting legal discussions with opposing counsel, screening protective orders, handling appeals, counseling with various parties, responding to citizen inquiries, ensuring legal deadlines are met, occasionally handling county civil work, providing training, and representing the state in various hearings.

Education and experience required include a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, at least ten years of experience working as a licensed attorney, and the capability to handle complex cases without or with minimal supervision. Other qualifications include a license to practice law in the State of Texas and a valid Texas driver's license.
