Our Organization and Mission: The Reemployment Assistance Appeals Commission is the appellate body responsible for reviewing contested decisions of FloridaCommerce hearing officers. The Commission is comprised of a Chairman and two Commissioners, each appointed by the Governor. Although the Commission is housed within FloridaCommerce it operates as an independent review body.
The Difference You Will Make: The chosen applicant will help to ensure that the dispositions of reemployment assistance appeals are legally correct, both substantively and procedurally, and are processed in accordance with state and federal timeliness standards.
The Position Under the direct supervision of a Commission Executive Senior Attorney, this employee can be expected to perform the following duties: Review the record of formal administrative hearings conducted pursuant to Chapter 443, Florida Statutes, and exercise independent judgment in determining: whether the hearing was conduct in accordance with the requirements of due process; whether the hearing officer's findings of fact are supported by legally sufficient evidence; and whether the conclusions of law are in accord with statutory and regulatory provisions of law as interpreted by the Commission, state courts, and federal courts. Prepare a summary that includes a legal opinion with respect to its disposition and draft a proposed order for the Commission, which will constitute final administrative agency action. The attorney may also be expected to provide general legal advice and assistance to the Commission; handle telephone inquiries from the public regarding appeals to the Commission; and, be called upon to represent the Commission before the Florida district courts of appeal. This position provides an opportunity to develop legal skills and obtain experience working for a quasi-judicial administrative entity. The Commission provides extensive in-house training and also encourages its employees to take advantage of FloridaCommerce and USDOL trainings, which are made available throughout the year, as well as Florida Bar continuing legal education courses. The position also provides exposure to numerous areas of employment law.

Where You Will Work: You will work at the Reemployment Assistance Appeals Commission, located at 1211 Governors Square Boulevard, Suite 300, Tallahassee, Florida 32301. While remote work may be approved, the employee must work from the office a minimum of two days per week.
Qualifications: Florida Bar in good standing. As a condition of pre-employment eligibility, a Level 2 security background screening is required, which consists of fingerprinting and a check of local, state, and national law enforcement records.
