Attorney - Revenue Section Chief

Job Description

The Iowa Attorney General’s Office is hiring a Section Chief for the Revenue Section in the Agency Counsel Division. The Section Chief will supervise and manage a team of approximately a dozen lawyers and support staff, acting as the primary liaison with the Iowa Department of Revenue. The Section represents the department before courts and administrative tribunals, gives legal advice on operations, and leads litigation in state courts and federal bankruptcy courts to enforce and recover state tax assessments. The position provides legal services and advice in tax, lottery, ABD, and tobacco compliance, reporting to the Deputy Attorney General for Agency Counsel.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and manage the Revenue Section’s lawyers and support staff. • Serve as the Office’s lead representative to the Iowa Department of Revenue. • Represent the department in legal matters before courts and administrative bodies. • Provide legal advice on tax, lottery, ABD, and tobacco compliance. • Oversee litigation in state courts and federal bankruptcy courts related to tax assessments.

Requirements and Preferences

• Passion for public service.
• Exceptional skills in statutory construction, construing transaction and estate documents, and furnishing written and oral advice on complex matters.
• Experience practicing tax law, advising government bodies, and managing a team of legal professionals.
• Five years of experience practicing law and licenses (or the ability to obtain licenses) to practice law in Iowa and Iowa’s federal and bankruptcy courts.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited law school and experience equal to five years of full‑time practice of law.
• Current, continuous experience in the Department of Justice that includes three years of full‑time practice of law.

Additional Qualification Requirements

At the time of appointment, employees in this class must be admitted to the Iowa State Bar and to the appropriate federal courts.

Pay and Benefits

Salary ranges from $118,414.40 to $168,417.60, depending on experience. The Office offers a collegial environment, flexible schedules, excellent work‑life balance, and no hourly billing.
