Insurance Coverage Senior Litigation Associate | New York City (Hybrid)

$160,000–$220,000 Base Salary | Full-Time, Permanent

The experience expected from applicants, as well as additional skills and qualifications needed for this job are listed below.

You've put in the years, developed your litigation skills, and earned the experience. Now, are you getting the responsibility and opportunities that should come with it?

If you're an experienced insurance coverage or litigation attorney who's ready for more ownership, greater involvement in strategy, and the chance to handle sophisticated matters from start to finish, this could be well worth a conversation.

Distinct is working with an established, mid-sized law firm in New York City that's looking to strengthen its team with an experienced Insurance Coverage Senior Litigation Associate.

This isn't a role where you'll spend your days handling one small part of a case before passing it along to someone else.

You'll be trusted to take real ownership of your matters, work closely with experienced attorneys, develop litigation strategies, and represent clients throughout the litigation and arbitration process.

And with hybrid working, competitive compensation, and a genuinely hands-on role, there's plenty to like about this opportunity.

What Would You Be Doing?

You'll be joining an established team handling a broad range of insurance coverage, insurance defense, and complex litigation and arbitration matters.

The work is varied, challenging, and well suited to someone who enjoys being actively involved in their cases rather than simply working behind the scenes.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing insurance coverage, insurance defense, and complex litigation matters.
  • Handling litigation and arbitration proceedings from the early stages through to resolution.
  • Conducting detailed legal research, insurance coverage analysis, and case assessments.
  • Drafting motions, legal memoranda, pleadings, and other substantive litigation documents.
  • Managing discovery and taking and defending depositions.
  • Preparing cases for trial and participating in court proceedings.
  • Representing clients in arbitrations, mediations, and other dispute resolution proceedings.
  • Developing case strategies and providing clear, practical advice to clients.
  • Working collaboratively with partners and colleagues while independently managing your own responsibilities.

The real appeal? You'll have the opportunity to be genuinely involved in the direction of your cases, not just the day-to-day paperwork that comes with them.

What Are They Looking For?

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • 5+ years of experience in litigation, arbitration, insurance coverage, and/or reinsurance matters.
  • Admission to the New York or New Jersey Bar.
  • A Juris Doctor (JD) with strong academic credentials.
  • Solid experience handling discovery, depositions, trial preparation, and court proceedings.
  • Excellent legal research, analytical, and drafting skills.
  • Strong communication and organizational abilities.
  • The confidence to manage competing deadlines, take initiative, and exercise sound legal judgment.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively with partners, colleagues, and clients.

You don't necessarily need to tick every box. If you've developed a strong litigation background and are looking to take on more substantive responsibility, I'd be happy to hear from you.

Why Is This Worth Exploring?

At this stage in your career, your next move should be about more than simply changing firms or increasing your salary.

It should be about finding the right environment to continue developing, taking on meaningful work, and building toward your longer-term ambitions.

Here's what makes this opportunity particularly appealing:

  • Competitive compensation: $160,000–$220,000 base salary, depending on experience.
  • Hybrid flexibility: A balance between working remotely and collaborating with colleagues in New York City.
  • Sophisticated litigation: Exposure to challenging insurance coverage, defense, and arbitration matters.
  • Greater ownership: The opportunity to take responsibility for your cases and contribute meaningfully to litigation strategy.
  • Direct involvement: Hands-on experience with depositions, court proceedings, arbitrations, and mediations.
  • Experienced colleagues: Work alongside established litigators who can offer support, guidance, and collaboration.
  • Continued career development: A chance to further establish yourself as a senior litigator while taking on increasingly substantive work.

If you're feeling like you've reached a point where you're ready for more, but your current firm isn't quite giving you the opportunity to demonstrate what you're capable of, this could be an interesting next step.

Interested? Let's Have a Conversation.

You don't need to be actively looking to find out more.

If the opportunity sounds interesting, feel free to send me your resume and I'll be happy to talk you through the firm, the team, and what they're looking for.

Equally, if you'd prefer a confidential conversation before sending anything over, that's absolutely fine.

I appreciate that between depositions, court appearances, client demands, deadlines, and the never-ending pursuit of billable hours, finding time to explore the market isn't always straightforward.

Sometimes a quick ten-minute conversation is the easiest way to see whether something is worth exploring.

Not quite the right opportunity?

No problem at all. I work with law firms throughout New York and across the East Coast, so even if this particular position isn't the right fit, there may be another opportunity that better aligns with your experience, ambitions, or preferred working arrangements.

Whether you're actively considering a move or simply curious about what's happening in the legal market, I'm always happy to have a conversation.
