Insurance Coverage & Bad Faith Associate | Raleigh, NC | $150,000–$210,000
Most people think coverage is reading the small print. Good coverage lawyers know the small print is where the money gets decided.
I’m Clark Pollins at Distinct Recruitment, hiring for an established firm with a dedicated coverage team in Raleigh. I’ve recently placed an attorney here, and they’re loving it. That’s the best reference I can give you.
Why this team
- Carriers across the Carolinas already know this group. You’d inherit those relationships instead of spending years building them from scratch.
- The work is complex coverage and bad faith. Bad faith is where a coverage call gets tested. You’d be the one making sure it holds up.
- You’d advise carriers before a dispute starts and litigate it when it doesn’t resolve. You get both halves of the job.
- Coverage is the practice here. You’re building a specialty alongside lawyers who’ve made it their career.
Where it leads
- You’d work directly with the partner who heads the team. No layers between you and the person running the practice.
- Alongside them are attorneys with deep coverage experience. You’d be learning from some of the strongest coverage lawyers in the Carolinas, on live files.
- Partnership here is earned by your work. Put in the effort and build your practice, and the path is open to you.
The numbers
- $150,000–$210,000, depending on experience.
- The range is wide because the firm is hiring at two levels: around two or three years in, and four or five. Your experience sets where you land.
- 1,850-hour billable target.
- A strong bonus structure. Some attorneys here earn a guaranteed bonus at year end, so ask me what’s on the table for you.
- Hybrid, with plenty of flexibility in how you split your week. That makes it workable from Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill or anywhere across the Triangle.
Your week
- Working through policy language and telling carriers where they stand.
- Advising on bad faith exposure across North Carolina and South (If Barred)
- Writing coverage opinions a claims team uses to decide what gets paid.
- Litigating declaratory judgment actions and bad faith claims in state and federal court.
- Working with claims professionals who’ll come to know you by name.
Who they want
- Two to five years in insurance coverage or insurance defense. If you’ve defended insured claims and want to move to the coverage side, this is the move.
- Comfortable with duty-to-defend analysis, reservation of rights, and declaratory judgment work, or keen to build that expertise.
- NC bar required. SC bar is a big plus, since the team covers both states.
- Sharp research and writing. You enjoy an argument that turns on one defined term.
- Strong academics matter to this firm.
