Attorney IV

The Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), better known as Cal/OSHA, protects and improves the health and safety of working people in California and the safety of passengers riding on elevators, amusement rides, and tramways. DOSH is housed within the Department of Industrial Relations. Working at the Division of Occupational Safety and Health, widely known as Cal/OSHA, means much more than showing up for a job. You will be able to work on programs that are vital to the health and safety of the community, work force, and the state. We recognize the strength in teamwork. We know that encouraging collaboration and diversity, educating employers in best practices, and protecting the health and safety of employees through enforcement of the California Labor Code and regulations will benefit our economy as a whole. Be part of a team that prides itself in making a difference for Californians. Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Counsel of the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Attorney IVs represent DOSH in the full range of legal issues within the jurisdiction of the Division. Attorney IVs are typically the most experienced and qualified attorneys within DOSH and serve as lead over other attorneys within the unit. They are expected to mentor less experienced attorneys; devise curriculum and author original training materials; serve as lead counsel; and have special subject matter expertise in discrete practice areas to serve as a resource for other attorneys and field staff regarding that practice area. Attorney IVs also perform administrative functions, such as assigning cases, projects and other matters to staff attorneys, as well as other duties as assigned by the Assistant Chief Counsels, Chief Counsel or Division Chief. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Representing DOSH in complex and sensitive administrative hearings against employers before the Occupational Safety and Health Appeals Board;
  • Representing DOSH in civil and writ litigation before California trial and appellate courts;
  • Representing and advising the Chief, management, and the Division with regard to policy, sensitive and high profile matters, and program direction;
  • Analyzing and drafting proposed legislation, drafting proposed regulations, and appearing before the Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board; and
  • Providing legal services on a wide variety of other issues that may arise in the operation of DOSH, in multiple substantive areas of law.

(**NOTE telework agreements are available and attorneys currently conduct a majority of hearings remotely.)

This posting may be used to fill future vacancies in accordance with 2 CCR §249.3 To be considered for this Attorney IV job opportunity, applicants must be either reachable on an employment list, have transfer eligibility or have reinstatement eligibility.
