Essential Job Functions

  • Provide excellent patient care by performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating diseases, and providing preventive care according to patient signalment, lifestyle, and environment.
  • Utilize a problem-based approach that includes developing a complete problem list for every patient, differential diagnoses, a diagnostic plan, and treatments based on test results.
  • Document all patient observations, findings, treatments, medications, client interactions, and diagnoses in the medical record concisely and in detail.
  • Perform routine and complex surgical procedures including spays/neuters, abdominal exploratory, and mass removals.
  • Perform routine and complex dental procedures including full dental examinations, evaluation of radiographs, extractions, and oral surgeries.
  • Develop treatment plans for day hospitalization patients, transition to overnight care as needed, and communicate with referral hospitals.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

  • Participate in rounds as incoming or exiting doctor at the beginning and end of shifts.
  • Disseminate knowledge to improve care and communication for staff, patients, and clients.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Nature Of Supervision

The Veterinarian reports directly to the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director and works under their supervision. The Veterinarian also serves as a de facto leader in the hospital and maintains professional, personable conduct.

Planning And Problem Solving

Exemplary problem-solving skills are required for expeditious diagnosis of patient problems.

Supervisory Responsibility

No direct supervisory responsibilities; however, the Veterinarian is a de facto leader.

Education & Experience

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an AVMA-accredited school.
  • Active licensure as a veterinarian in the state and ability to obtain by start date.
  • Current DEA and Controlled Substance licenses as applicable.
  • USDA Category I accreditation or completion within two months.
  • Comfortable performing anesthesia, routine surgeries, spays/neuters, mass removals, and dentistry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Compassionate, professional demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.
  • Computer and telephone skills.
  • Team player, open to learning and accepting change.

Work Environment

Primary work is in the Vetco Total Care veterinary hospital. Duties include bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, standing for long periods. Most time spent in direct client and pet contact.

Salary Range

$87,700.00 – $186,100.00 (Hourly or Salary). Additional benefits included in Petco Total Rewards.
