Position Summary

This position is a full-time attorney in the University of Georgia’s Office of Legal Affairs. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel for Labor & Employment advises the University’s Human Resources Division, Office of Faculty Affairs, and Equal Opportunity Office on federal and state labor and employment laws, anti‑discrimination laws, and faculty disciplinary, tenure, and promotion policies. The role provides independent counsel to assigned units, represents the Office of Legal Affairs on committees, and coordinates with the Attorney General’s Office.

Minimum Qualifications

  • J.D. degree
  • 2 years related legal experience
  • State Bar membership

Preferred Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Minimum of seven years experience with a focus on employment law
  • Experience in higher education law including faculty affairs, compliance, and equal opportunity and federal anti‑discrimination law
  • Willingness to relocate to the Athens area

Duties / Responsibilities

  • 40% General legal advice and counseling to assigned units, including Human Resources, Faculty Affairs, and Equal Opportunity Office; advising on legal risks, mitigation strategies, contract review, policy review, and training.
  • 40% Provide guidance and serve as subject matter expert for colleges and units in specialized areas, including employment law, faculty tenure, academic freedom, compliance (Title IX, Title VI, accessibility, Wage & Hour, FMLA).
  • 20% Perform other duties as assigned by General Counsel.
