Associate General Counsel

Full Time; Location: Athens Area; Salary: $125,000 - $145,000; Benefits Eligible; Employment Type: Employee; FTE: 1.00; Retirement Plan: TRS or ORP; Proposed Starting Date: 08/01/2026.
Position Summary
This is a full‑time attorney role in the University of Georgia’s Office of Legal Affairs. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel will provide independent legal advice and counseling to designated university units, manage litigation, and represent the Office on key committees.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice, policy interpretation, and contract review to assigned university units.
- Manage litigation and litigation coordination with the Attorney General of the State of Georgia.
- Represent the Office of Legal Affairs on committees and in meetings with university administrators.
- Coordinate with the Attorney General’s Office and other external counsel.
- Perform other duties assigned by the General Counsel.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Plan and manage a variety of tasks
- Work effectively with various constituents in a large public institution
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, and sound judgment
Minimum Qualifications
JD, 2 years of relevant legal experience, State Bar membership.
Preferred Qualifications
The successful applicant should have a J.D. from an accredited law school, strong academic credentials, be admitted or immediately eligible for admission to practice law in Georgia, and have at least seven years of experience, preferably including higher education law.
