Position Summary
We are seeking two experienced candidates for the Associate Director of Development or Senior Associate Director of Development positions within the UVA Health Development Office, specifically for the Cancer Programs and Neurosciences teams.
Cancer Programs Role
Reporting to the Executive Director, Cancer Programs, the successful candidate will maximize fundraising support for research, clinical care, and education through strong partnerships with faculty, healthcare providers, patient families, community members, UVA alumni, and private foundations.
Neurosciences Role
Reporting to the Director of Development, Neurosciences, the successful candidate will manage a growing portfolio within Neurosciences, supporting research, clinical care, and emerging priorities across neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, and related areas. The incumbent will partner with clinical and research leadership to shape and fund priorities.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the lead fundraiser for specific areas of UVA Health, managing a portfolio of donors and prospects.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy for assigned departments, divisions, and priorities in patient care, research, education, and community support.
- Evaluate HIPAA‑compliant patient data to identify high‑potential major gift prospects.
- Create and implement a transparent donor strategy to advance prospects along the development continuum.
- Collaborate with UVA Health Development Office colleagues to ensure alignment and synergy.
- Establish a consistent presence within assigned departments and programs to build partnerships and promote philanthropy.
- Provide training for faculty and staff on philanthropic principles and tactics.
- Translate complex scientific information into accessible language for donors.
- Build and strengthen relationships with UVA Health leadership and stakeholders, including department chairs, division chiefs, and center leaders.
- Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for Associate Director of Development
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum of 3 years of fundraising, with a record of securing gifts of $50,000 or more.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and manage a portfolio of prospects.
- Experience managing relationships and using a database to maintain records and reports such as donor data, prospect contacts, solicitations, and proposals.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Ability to hold oneself accountable to goals and metrics.
- Ability to travel frequently, including occasional evenings and weekends.
- Proficiency in navigating complex interpersonal dynamics with high emotional intelligence.
- Strong communication skills and ability to articulate mission and priorities.
- Valid driver’s license.
Minimum Qualifications for Senior Associate Director of Development
- Bachelor’s degree.
- At least 5 years of fundraising experience, with a record of securing gifts of $100,000 or more.
- Experience within a major fundraising or capital campaign.
- Demonstrated ability to manage high‑level relationships and navigate complex interpersonal dynamics.
- Proven experience managing and developing fundraising strategies for specific programs.
- Strong communication skills and ability to articulate mission and priorities.
- Ability to use a database to maintain records and reports such as donor data, prospect contacts, solicitations, and proposals.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Ability to hold oneself accountable to goals and metrics.
- Proficiency in traveling frequently, including evenings and weekends.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree.
- More than five years of frontline fundraising experience as a senior gift officer in academic medicine.
- Prior experience staffing senior leaders and volunteers in a complex, matrixed organization.
- Track record of demonstrating initiative, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to evolving fundraising initiatives.
- Experience developing strategic fundraising plans with ambitious targets and delivering results.
- Preference for applicants with past management experience in academic medicine fundraising leadership.
- Proficiency using CRM databases.
- Success within collaborative fundraising models.
- Robust understanding of the principles of philanthropy, higher education, alumni relations, and relationship management.
- Proven experience building relationships with academic medical faculty and comparable organizational leaders.
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job requiring extensive desktop computer use. Occasionally, travel will be required to attend meetings and programs.
Salary Range
- Associate Director: $80,000 – $90,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
- Senior Associate Director: $90,000 – $105,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
Position Type & Work Location
- Exempt, benefited positions.
- Dependent on funding availability and contingency upon funding.
- Hybrid workplace: remote work permitted with a secure home office and availability for in‑office collaboration as needed in Charlottesville, Virginia.
- Hybrid benefit requires residency within reasonable travel distance to UVA Grounds.
