Position Overview
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (A&T) StateUniversity invites applications and nominations for the position ofAssociate Dean of Research and Innovation ( ADRI ). The ADRIreports to the Dean of the Hairston College of Health and HumanSciences ( HCHHS ) and is a member of the College of Health andHuman Sciences Leadership Team. The ADRI is responsible fordeveloping and implementing the vision, plan, and policies to guidethe college’s research goals and outcomes, and for leading allaspects of the college’s research agenda, including infrastructureand operations. The ADRI is expected to work closely andcollaboratively with faculty, department Chairs, and staff.
The Associate Dean will provide leadership to the research andinnovation arm of the college and is responsible for increasingsponsored research; supporting HCHHS investigators; facilitatingdevelopment and implementation of multidisciplinary projects;seeking out new sources of funding; connecting the departments andthe School of Nursing in innovative and creative ways for successin the research funding space; and, overseeing the ethical,informed and safe conduct of research.
The ADRI will have academic and scientific experience in conductingand managing research programs; securing external funding;familiarity with federal grant finance and compliance issues;experience evaluating research proposals; and, will possess theleadership qualities and abilities needed to support the collegeachieve its vision of being internationally acclaimed for itsinterdisciplinary and innovative research.
Specific responsibilities of the ADRI include: developing andfaculty research mentoring initiatives (especially junior faculty);providing leadership and oversight for the research enrichment activities; assisting faculty with overseeing their researchbudgets and programs; evaluating research center opportunities; fostering collaborative, interdisciplinary research betweendepartments and between the School of Nursing and other academicunits at NC A&T; working with the Division of Research ( DOR )on all aspects of research administration including compliance andfinancial issues; working with the grant administrator to supportproposal development and post-award grant management.

The John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and HumanSciences ( HCHHS ) comprises six departments and The Department ofPopulation Health Management & Policy. The HCHHS offers thefollowing undergraduate degree programs; Communication Sciences andDisorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing,Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. At the graduate level,HCHHS offers four graduate degree programs including the Masters inPhysician Assistant Studies (PA program), Master of Social Work (MSW ), Master of Science in Health Psychology and PhD in SocialWork, PhD in Applied Psychology, and Doctor of Nurse Practice ( DNP). The HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence inIntegrative Health Disparities and Equity Research ( CIHDER ), ahub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement effortsto alleviate health inequities.
The HCHHS capitalizes on the synergistic relationships betweenthese departments to develop advanced academic programming. Throughinnovative programs and high impact and student-centered pedagogy,faculty in the college foster an inter-professional learningenvironment for undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty alsoengage in scholarly and service activities at the department,school, college, university, and community levels, and withinprofessional organizations. Minimum Requirements
Earned doctorate with five years of experience in fundedresearch.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training,Education
The preferred candidate will have an earned doctorate (preferablyPh.D.) in an area aligned with the departments within the HCHHS,experience with managing large research programs, externally fundedresearch, and administrative leadership experience in a researchenvironment. In addition, the candidate should have demonstratedsuccess as an administrator and fiscal manager, a record of successin procuring and managing sponsored research programs, andexperience in research policy formation, compliance, and operation.The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to workcollaboratively with various internal and external constituencies,promote interdisciplinary research, and work with a culturallyunique population. The successful candidate must also have theability to develop the college’s research infrastructure, includinga focus on faculty research training.
