Associate Counsel – California Litigation
GEICO is looking to hire an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in California courts and other first‑party insurance defense. The position is with GEICO Staff Counsel located in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, and San Francisco, and will work remotely.
Responsibilities
- Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
- Render opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department.
- Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions and examinations before trial as well as examinations under oath.
- Defend matters by trial or dispositive hearing as assigned.
Qualifications
- 2–6+ years of litigation experience on insurance/defense and/or personal injury.
- Juris Doctor degree.
- Admission to the California Bar and licensed in good standing to practice law in California.
- Must be able to travel as required to attend trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.
- Must document files in a clear, concise, professional written manner understood by customers, clients, co‑workers, and other employees.
- Must follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts, facilitate conflict resolution, and demonstrate strong organizational and prioritization skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Civil litigation experience.
- Insurance defense–related litigation experience.
- Professional communication skills in person, via telephone, and in written correspondence/email.
Location & Compensation
REMOTE. Annual Salary range: $112,750.00 – $186,550.00 (based on experience, qualifications, and business considerations). GEICO will not sponsor employment authorization for this position.
