Associate Chair and IRF Medical Director, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)

Overview

Associate Chair and IRF Medical Director, PM&R at Staten Island University Hospital – Northwell Health. The Department of PM&R is seeking a physician leader to serve as the Associate Chair and Medical Director of the Inpatient Rehab Facility (IRF) at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH). This position reports to the Chair of Rehab Services for SIUH and its service line for the health system. The Associate Chair will assist in managing and directing all PM&R services for SIUH, provide direct patient care to inpatients admitted to the IRF, oversee adherence to regulatory requirements (federal and state), encourage academic research within the department, and help set department goals. The ideal candidate will have strategic, clinical, quality, administrative, teaching and research responsibilities.

In addition to strategic leadership, the Medical Director will maintain an active clinical presence on the IRF unit. This leader will oversee day-to-day operations and the overall success of the program, ensure high-quality, patient-centered care, drive performance improvement and quality improvement initiatives, and present outcomes at hospital forums and committee meetings. The role also includes supporting CARF accreditation efforts and fostering strong interdisciplinary collaboration with therapy services, medical and surgical specialties, case management, social work, and other partners to optimize patient outcomes and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and direction for PM&R services at SIUH and the IRF.
• Deliver direct patient care to inpatients in the IRF.
• Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements (federal and state).
• Advance academic research and contribute to departmental goals.
• Oversee day-to-day IRF operations and program success.
• Lead performance improvement and quality improvement initiatives; present outcomes at hospital forums and committees.
• Support CARF accreditation efforts and promote interdisciplinary collaboration with therapy services, medical and surgical specialties, case management, social work, and ancillary partners.

Qualifications

• M.D. degree or equivalent from an accredited College of Medicine.
• Board Certification in PM&R.
• Current New York State physician license.
• Experience in directorship of an IRF and PM&R clinical and/or teaching program (preferably in a major medical center or health system).
• Outstanding communication and management skills; ability to work collaboratively with medical staff, hospital management, and staff.
• Recent experience in managing IRF patients using generally accepted methods and techniques.
