Assistant Store Managers (ASMs) are responsible for contributing to the store’s success by assisting the Store Manager in executing store operations and managing Shift Managers, Shift Leads, and Sales Associates to provide World Class Service to customers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Sales Leadership
- Assist in driving sales, service, and customer experience initiatives to achieve sales, KPIs and other store performance goals.
- Regularly monitor customer service and selling models within the store to ensure all staff interact with customers professionally and resolve complaints.
- Direct work as needed and celebrate the team’s efforts and accomplishments.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism and positive attitude in the workplace, including appropriate verbal, written, and email communication.
Customer Excellence
- Protect employees and customers by maintaining a safe and clean store environment.
- Maintain cleanliness and well‑being of all livestock, including animal care and feeding.
- Accountable for protection of all company assets, tangible and intangible.
- Motivate, coach, develop, and performance‑manage teams focused on the expected customer experience and selling model.
- Review all store communications, distribute information to employees, and ensure required actions are completed.
- Ensure company values are upheld and accurately represented within the store.
Operations & Talent Development
- Maintain brand standards and operational excellence.
- Responsible for maintaining the fish system, inventory, ordering, and adherence to budgets.
- Assist the Store Manager in inventory ordering within budget and in meeting shrink goals.
- Partner with the Store Manager to create a team‑oriented environment through customer service role‑plays and in‑store contests.
- Support the management of labor hours to meet customer needs and operational compliance.
- Support overall training to ensure all plans, checklists, sales techniques, and new product launches are executed.
- Assist in day‑to‑day task assignment while training and developing store associates for future success.
- Assist the Store Manager with hiring needs, maintaining a proactive staffing plan and conducting interviews.
- Partner with the Store Manager to plan and execute community events and build relationships with rescue agencies.
Business Insight
- Understand the business and regularly monitor it throughout the shift.
- React quickly to business needs.
Experience, Education & Certifications
- Minimum 2 years in a retail management role.
- Experience working with and around animals.
- College degree an asset.
Job Requirements
- Flexible work schedule including morning, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
- At least two closing shifts per week, one full weekend per period, and one full weekend off per period if coverage permits.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Heavy lifting up to 55 lbs several times throughout a shift; standing or moving around most of the time. Requires active listening and observation when communicating with customers and merchandising the store. Work is temperature‑stable, occasionally alone. Accidental injuries from pets are possible. Common injuries include slips, trips, falls, and strains/sprains from lifting.
