Assistant Professor of Coastal Processes
Recruiting from the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Appalachian State University, located in Boone, NC. This full‑time position (9 months per academic year) is tenure‑track at the rank of Assistant Professor.
Position Summary and Requirements
The candidate must have a Ph.D. (or ABD with specified conditions, see below) and demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate education, mentoring undergraduate research, and developing an externally funded research program.
Research expectations: broad coverage of Coastal Processes. The instructor will develop and teach new upper‑level courses on:
- Coastal Processes
- Physical Oceanography for majors
Teaching responsibilities may also include support for existing courses such as:
- Geomorphology (GES 3333)
- Research/field methods courses (GES 2750/2751/2752)
- Introductory lecture/lab courses (e.g., GES 1105)

ABD Consideration
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD candidates may be considered provided evidence of successful dissertation defense is received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one‑year fixed‑term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor with a salary reduced to the lower rate for full‑time instructors. If degree verification is provided before the end of the one‑year contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of Assistant Professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates who have earned a doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered.
