Assistant Professor, Department of Criminal Justice (RACE & INEQUALITY)

Position

We are seeking an appointment‑track Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice (RACE & INEQUALITY). The appointment is expected to begin Fall 2027. Candidates should be able to teach core courses on race and ethnicity, and/or elective courses on gangs and the criminal justice system. The role requires excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, and will participate in department, college, and university committees.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses on Race, Inequality and the Criminal Justice System and/or Gangs and the Criminal Justice System, and develop additional related courses as needed.
  • Produce scholarship commensurate with tenure requirements in the area of race/inequality and/or gangs.
  • Engage in student advising, mentorship, and service at the department, college, and university level.
  • Participate in departmental and university‑wide committees and contribute to the broader disciplinary community.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in the social sciences with an emphasis in criminal and social justice.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching a diverse undergraduate student population, including first‑generation, low‑socioeconomic and historically minoritized students.
  • Ability to teach Race, Inequality and the Criminal Justice System and/or Gangs and the Criminal Justice System.
  • Potential for curricular growth/development of the criminal justice major.
  • Research agenda advancing criminal and social justice in race/inequality and/or gangs.
  • Strong record or potential for scholarly accomplishments appropriate to the appointment level.
  • Evidence of service to the university and the discipline.
  • Experience working collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Ability to balance teaching, scholarship, and service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialization in pedagogy and scholarship with a focus on race/ethnicity or gangs and their intersections with the criminal justice system.

Compensation

Assistant Professor (Academic Year) salary range: $6,221–$13,224 per month (12 payments). Anticipated hiring range: $6,990–$7,130 per month.
