FUNCTION
The Section of Ophthalmology, Department of Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center seeks an assistant professor in the clinical faculty track, focusing on cornea, anterior surface disorders, and dry eye. Candidates must be board eligible or board certified in ophthalmology, have completed a fellowship in cornea or possess equivalent experience, and be eligible for licensure in Texas. Patients with ophthalmic and systemic malignancies will form the core population. The role includes ample opportunities for clinical research and teaching residents and fellows.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Patient Care
Practices ophthalmology in an exemplary manner, upholding standards set by the Texas Board of Medical Examiners and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, while balancing other academic activities.
- Develops and maintains a clinical ophthalmology practice for patients referred to M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
- Provides physician staffing for the outpatient ophthalmology clinic and inpatient service at a level commensurate with peers.
- Reviews, evaluates, and correctly interprets medical records and patient data based on experience.
- Fills out ICD and CPT coding on clinic charge cards within 24 hours.
- Completes patient documentation for medical records, dictating concisely and reviewing documents.
- Corresponds in writing or telephone with referring physicians or other involved physicians regarding patient care and treatment.
- Keeps abreast of current management approaches by attending continuing education conferences.
- Requests appropriate medical consultations by phone or in writing.
- Provides a role model for faculty, fellows, residents, and other trainees.
Medical Direction of Non‑Physician Personnel
- Assumes responsibility for all aspects of ophthalmologic care for each patient.
- Utilizes non‑physician personnel for technical functions under personal direction when necessary.
- Delegates functions based on education, training, and demonstrated skills.
Education / Teaching
Contributes to a balanced and integrated educational program for fellows, residents, and other trainees who rotate through the Ophthalmology Section.
- Completes evaluation forms for rotating residents promptly.
- Participates in and develops continuing education programs pertaining to ophthalmology.
- Attends and participates in division/department teaching and continuing conferences, presenting lectures with visual aids.
Research
Actively engages in clinical translational research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment.
- Develops clinical or translational research and scholarly programs aligned with departmental goals.
- Seeks appropriate funding mechanisms, completing grant applications and financial plans.
- Publishes or presents results in a timely fashion.
Administration
- Serves on institutional and hospital committees as requested, attending meetings and providing feedback.
- Assumes administrative duties as assigned by the department chairman or designee.
Service
- Represents the department at local, regional, state, and national meetings, traveling beyond the Houston area and disseminating information thereafter.
- Executes all policies and standards for the assistant professor appointment as outlined in the Handbook of Operating Procedures and the Physicians Referral Service Agreement.
Education and Licensure
- Graduate of an accredited medical school with an M.D. degree or equivalent.
- Completed a residency training program in ophthalmology and is board certified or board eligible.
Experience
- Two years as an instructor or five years post‑degree with any combination of experience as a clinician, clinical scientist, or GME trainee (excluding specialties with shorter residencies or fellowships).
Licensure
Must possess a valid and active Texas Medical license to practice medicine in the State of Texas.
