To assist in operation of minor league medical program. This includes player care/rehabs, administration and staff development. Will assist in determining department goals, philosophies, programs and protocols. The care and management of the athletes will be a collaboration amongst the following support staff: medical, strength and conditioning, nutrition, mental health and the coaching staff.

Responsibilities and Skills

Administration

  • Compile and send organizational injury reports as directed
  • Coordinate rehab player medical referrals
  • Assist as needed with medical billing
  • Manage budgets/inventory for the complex. Track and manage budgets of affiliate teams
  • Organize and manage the complex athletic training room, hydro areas and office space
  • Manage the EMR and ensure proper documentation. Audit the system bi-monthly and work with affiliate staff to ensure all documents are present
  • Medical Reviews: Assess and communicate medical info on free agents, trade prospects and draft prospects
  • Assist as needed with management of player/staff TUEs
  • Ensure staff compliance with and awareness of MLB Concussion Policy
  • Active monitoring of organization wide player testing protocols

Evaluation, Assessment, Rehab and Monitoring

  • Assist with coordination of preseason screenings, physicals and baseline testing, including arranging physicians for spring or draft physicals
  • Arrange, organize and refine ROM, shoulder, and grip measurements and how they are used
  • Manage and understand data, including dashboards such as Pulse, Hawkin-Dynamics, and internal systems
  • Assist with decisions regarding details of player rehabs. Work closely with physical therapist and medical coordinator on the management of injured athletes completing rehabilitation at the Florida complex. Will do daily rehab treatments
  • Assist with decisions regarding player injuries and rehabs at affiliate teams
  • Be available to travel to affiliates or Dominican Republic academy to assist in overseeing staff
  • Assist FCL/extended spring athletic trainer as needed during the season

Skills and competency must be demonstrated in the following areas:

  • Exercise/Movement Progressions: Utilize management strategies that address the athlete between the continuum of an acute injury to their full participation in games. Be able to address both site specific and global components to the injury when prescribing exercise and movement progressions.
  • Manual Therapy: Implement various hands on skills and techniques to help assist with the rehabilitation process, including soft tissue techniques, dry needling, joint mobilization/manipulation, and IASTM.
  • Running Progressions (Linear and Change of Direction Ability): Initiate and oversee the return to running and dynamic movement patterns that the athlete needs to perform during their progression.
  • Work Capacity/Energy Systems Development: Plan and adjust rehabilitation programming based on the energy system demands being trained or utilized.
  • Baseball Skill Integration: Integrate with the coaching staff regarding all baseball specific activities, including throwing, hitting, defensive skills and base running.
  • Modalities and Recovery Strategies: Apply various modalities and recovery options that help to manage both local tissue recovery and global recovery.

Professional Development

  • Mentor minor league athletic trainers and help them stay up to date on current rehabilitation, treatment and evaluation principles
  • Coordinate goals and development opportunities for medical staff
  • Maintain frequent communication with affiliate staff and encourage a positive, progressive atmosphere
  • Read current scientific literature in the fields of sports medicine, sports performance, recovery, nutrition, manual therapy, health and any other relevant field
  • Attend seminars, symposiums and conferences to further education in topics relevant to the management of injured baseball players
  • Develop and arrange educational opportunities for the medical and strength staffs

Communication

  • Be available via phone at all times, within reason
  • Manage relationships with affiliate team physicians and other medical contacts, and coordinate physician visits and outside services for rehab players
  • Communicate with front office when medical coordinator is unavailable or when directed
  • Minor League Rehabilitation Players: Update the Minor League Medical Coordinator, Minor League Physical Therapist, Strength and Conditioning Coordinator and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coordinator about all players currently under your care for rehabilitation, along with any physician involved in the plan of care. Expect daily meetings during the season.
  • Major League / 40-man Rehabilitation Players: Update the Major League Medical Staff, Major League Strength and Conditioning Staff, Minor League Medical Coordinator, Assistant Minor League Medical Coordinator, Strength and Conditioning Coordinator and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coordinator about all players currently under your care for rehabilitation, along with any physician involved in the plan of care.
  • Additional Staff: Communicate with affiliate Athletic Trainers and Strength and Conditioning Coaches when a player from the rehabilitation group travels to an affiliate to complete baseball activities, complete a rehab assignment or becomes activated from the Injured List. Also communicate to the coaching staff regarding any player rehabilitation plans relevant to them.
  • Offseason Check Ins: Organize offseason contact with all players in the organization and communicate this information with the medical coordinator and front office.
