Job Summary: The Assistant Director willsupport the Director of Environmental Health and Safety inmaintaining Bowdoin College's comprehensive Environmental Healthand Safety (EHS) Program. The Assistant Director will work underthe direction of the Director of EHS and be responsible fordeveloping and maintaining safety programs that meet applicablefederal, state and local regulations and standards. This positionprovides campus outreach, communications and education acrossacademic and administrative departments that promote risk reductionand awareness of EHS issues. Additional responsibilities includeongoing development and management of the campus learningmanagement system to support all EHS related training programs. TheAssistant Director supervises one Safety Specialist.

COMPENSATION

  • The hiring range for this position is expected to be:$77,200-$84,100.

Education/Skills Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree is required
  • RCRA Hazardous Waste and DOT Hazardous Materials Transportationtraining

Preferred:

  • Masters degree preferred
  • Certification in one of the following: Certified SafetyProfessional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)and/or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

A minimum of 4-7 years of experience in a related position/field isrequired.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, MEDEP, NFPA andstate/local regulations.
  • Detailed knowledge of environmental engineering principles,occupational health and safety sciences, and/or chemical processsafety (e.g. industrial hygiene, risk assessment, environmentalpermitting, environmental remediation, etc.)
  • Experience developing and editing written safety complianceplans and associated documents
  • Proficiency in the use of related office equipment, computersand software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to independently recognize programmatic growthopportunities and problem solve/implement strategic solutions,strong vision and self-starter with ability to both expand existingprograms and build programs from the ground-up.
  • Ability to provide insight, guidance, advice, and leadershipnecessary to ensure safety of the campus and its students, faculty,and staff.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical documents orregulations and then determine applicability and steps associatedwith achieving compliance.
  • Demonstrated capability to quickly assess situations, speak inpublic and make recommendations/decisions.
  • Ability to manage interpersonal relationships, resolveconflicts and communicate effectively with diverse groups and keycampus constituents.
  • Ability to conduct thorough safety inspections and generateaccurate and detailed inspection documents.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Project management and contracted services experience.

Standard Work Days and Hours

  • This is a full-time position working 40 hours/52 weeks, (1.00FTE)
  • Standard administrative hours are 8:30am - 5:00pm.
  • Exempt positions require the time commitment necessary tocomplete the essential duties of the position.
