Job Description
The Assistant Director of Academic Advising for Athletics reportsto and works closely with the Senior Associate Director of Academic Advising for Athletics to lead, organize, and implement all aspectsof academic advising for student athletes. S/he assistsstudent-athletes in exploring and identifying their educationalgoals and developing academic plans while maintaining compliancewith Rice University, NCAA, and the American Athletic Conferencerules and regulations. The Assistant Director advisesstudent-athletes through one-on-one meetings and as a team ofacademic advisors. The Assistant Director assists with the AthletePeer Academic Advisor Program, Orientation Week programming, andother advising programs and events. S/he provides input to theAssociate Director of Academic Advising for Athletics withstrategic planning, staffing decisions, budgetary responsibilities,and representation on various committees and work groups asrequested. The Assistant Director creates and/or participates inthe development of compliance reports, financial and administrativereports, and other reports relevant to Academic Advising forAthletics. The Assistant Director for Athletics may act on behalfof the Senior Associate Director as requested.
Ideal Candidate Statement
The ideal candidate will have direct experience in academicadvising for Division I student-athletes and a strong understandingof NCAA academic eligibility requirements. The role requiresexperience implementing programming, including new student-athleteorientation and peer academic advising. A demonstrated ability tobuild collaborative relationships with athletic department staff,coaches, faculty, and other campus departments is essential.Experience using advising systems (e.g., Banner, Navigate, DegreeWorks) is ideal, along with excellent communication,organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Workplace Requirements
This position is exclusively on-site, necessating all duties to be performed in person at Bixby Academic Center (M-F, 9-5). Someweekends and evening work are also required. Per Ricepolicy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
Hiring Range
$60,000 - $62,000 annually, contingent upon experience and qualifications.
*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- 2+ years of experience in academic advising for athletics orsimilar educational work experience

- Ability to interact and collaborate with staff and facultyleaders, gain the trust and confidence of students, and trainstudents for positions of leadership

Preferences
- Masters degree
- Experience in academic advising, mentoring, tutoring, and/orinstructional experience at a Division I university
- Early alert intervention, program assessment
- Experience utilizing education technology platforms such asNavigate, Banner, Degree Works, Canvas, Slate
- Experience with Rice University faculty, staff, students, andcollaborative offices or an understanding of a residential, liberalarts college
Essential Functions
- Assists with assigned advising committee through letterwriting, data collections and assessment
- Advises undergraduate students across a wide variety ofinterests and needs
- Assists with preparation and delivery of Orientation Weekprogramming
- Prepares and provides presentations for administrators, facultyadvisors, collaborative offices, and students during OrientationWeek and throughout the academic year
- Researches and reports on current best and progressivepractices for general and specialized areas of academicadvising
- Assists with creating and distributing academic advisingresources, including information from peer schools, nationalassociations, Rice academic departments, and collaborativeoffices
- Advises students through individual appointments andcentralized and residential college information sessions
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions
- Serve as the athletic advisor for designated athletic teams,maintaining ongoing communication with coaching staff regardingstudent-athlete progress and eligibility
- Monitor academic performance and eligibility to ensurecompliance with NCAA and university policies
- Support early alert efforts and academic interventions forat-risk student-athletes
- Support the planning, training, and supervision of the AthletePeer Academic Advisor Program
- Partner with the Associate Director on strategic planning,assessment, and policy development related to student-athleteadvising
- Represent the advising team on departmental and university-widecommittees related to athletics, advising, and studentsuccess
- Provide advising during peak periods, orientation events, andother key academic programs
- Serve as a delegate for the Senior Associate Director asneeded
