LHH is partnering with a large, nationally established project-based organization to identify an Assistant Controller for a key Mid-Atlantic operating division. This is a highly visible accounting leadership role for someone who has led meaningful accounting operations, developed strong teams, and enjoys improving the people, processes, and systems behind a growing business.
Reporting to the Division Controller, this individual will help lead the day-to-day accounting organization while partnering closely with finance, operations, and business leadership. The ideal candidate combines a strong accounting foundation with a track record of leading transactional teams, driving finance transformation, and operating effectively within a large, complex organization.
Open to candidates willing to relocate to DC Metro, assistance provided.
Responsibilities:
- Lead core accounting operations across functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, payroll-related accounting, and financial reporting.
- Oversee weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting requirements while ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Lead, coach, and develop accounting professionals while building accountability, technical capability, and opportunities for continued growth.
- Partner with operational and finance leadership to understand business performance, resolve accounting issues, and provide actionable financial insight.
- Maintain a strong internal control environment and support external audits, tax and regulatory requirements, and other compliance activities.
- Drive continuous improvement across accounting processes, workflows, reporting, and controls.
- Play a significant role in finance transformation initiatives, including ERP/system implementations, automation, process redesign, and standardization.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and other forward-looking finance activities in partnership with FP&A and operational leadership.
- Support accounting and financial activities within a project-driven operating environment, including cost analysis, WIP, revenue recognition, and project profitability.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or advanced degree preferred.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience with increasing leadership responsibility.
- Experience in an Assistant Controller, Controller, Director of Accounting, Senior Accounting Manager, or comparable accounting leadership role.
- Demonstrated experience leading transactional accounting teams within a sizable, complex organization or business unit.
- Proven success developing accounting talent and building high-performing teams, not simply supervising day-to-day activities.
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, audit, and operational accounting.
- Meaningful experience with finance transformation, ERP implementations, automation, shared services, or significant accounting process improvements.
- Ability to partner effectively across accounting, FP&A, operations, systems, and executive leadership.
