Assistant/Associate Professor : The Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Clinician-Educator to join our growing academic primary care team. This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative educator who is passionate about primary care, advancing medical education, and inspiring the next generation of family physicians. As the School of Medicine expands its medical student class size, the successful candidate will play a key leadership role in developing educational programs and curricula, recruiting and supporting community-based primary care preceptors, and creating meaningful learning experiences for medical students and residents. The position offers opportunities to contribute to medical education scholarship, foster innovation in teaching, and advance initiatives that encourage more students to pursue careers in Family Medicine, while providing comprehensive patient care at our University Family Medicine practice in Baltimore. The ideal candidate will be committed to serving the community and advancing the clinical, educational, and academic missions of the Department and the School of Medicine.

This position includes serving as:

  • Assistant Clerkship Director for the Family Medicine clerkship
  • Physician Director of Preceptor Recruitment and Retention

Transition to Residency Course Director

Primary Responsibilities

Clinical Faculty

  • Maintain an active outpatient clinical practice providing comprehensive family medicine and may include occasional on-call coverage and home calls.
  • Teach and supervise medical students and residents in the clinical setting.
  • Participate in scholarly activity, departmental conferences, committees, and academic initiatives.

Assistant Clerkship Director

  • Partner with the Clerkship Director to oversee the Family Medicine clerkship.
  • Mentor and advise medical students, including those pursuing careers in Family Medicine.
  • Participate in medical school admission interviews. Conduct curriculum development, student assessment, grading, clerkship quality improvement, and clinical site development.
  • Collaborate with student organizations and departmental educational committees.

Director of Preceptor Recruitment & Retention

  • Lead statewide physician engagement efforts to recruit, develop, and retain community-based clinical preceptors.
  • Cultivate relationships with physician practices, Federally Qualified Health Centers, community health centers, and regional Area Health Education Centers partners.
  • Conduct site visits, support preceptor orientation and training, and enhance the quality of community-based medical education.
  • Guide statewide initiatives focused on expanding clinical training opportunities in rural and underserved communities.

Transition to Residency Course Director

  • Direct the Department's Transition to Residency course for graduating medical students entering Family Medicine residency.
  • Strengthen curriculum focused on clinical readiness, procedural skills, practice management, and professional development.

Coordinate faculty, course logistics, student assessment, and continuous program improvement.

Candidates must be board certified/eligible in Family Medicine and eligible for unrestricted license in the State of Maryland. This position requires a medical degree from a recognized accredited domestic university (or foreign equivalent), strong commitment to patient care and teaching, and the ability to work well in a team setting.

Expected rank for this position will be Assistant Professor or higher, however, final rank and tenure status will be commensurate with selected candidate’s experience.

Expected salary range is $209,000 (min) and $317,051 (max). The referenced salary range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. This salary range does not include all components of the Family Medicine faculty compensation program or pay from participation in Family Medicine’s variable compensation program. Therefore, the actual compensation paid to the selected candidate may vary from the salary range stated herein. For more information, please contact the hiring department.

The referenced salary range represents the minimum (25%) and maximum (90%) salaries for this position and is based on the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.
