Job Summary: Reporting to the Director of Pharmacy, this role supports pharmacy operations under the guidance of licensed pharmacists. The Pharmacy Technician performs essential pharmacy functions to ensure optimal pharmaceutical care within a healthcare setting located in the Midwest region of the United States.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Efficiently delivers medications to nursing units and returns items as needed, completing rounds promptly and ensuring proper storage of refrigerated items.
  • Maintains and stocks automated dispensing cabinets accurately, verifying medication placement, counts, and expiration dates.
  • Performs aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and sterile dosage forms, adhering to strict aseptic techniques and quality control documentation.
  • Processes requisitions and floor stock for nursing and ancillary units, maintaining appropriate logs and stock levels while removing expired items.
  • Handles controlled substances with care, including preparation of proof-of-use documentation, restocking, waste disposal, and compliance with regulations.
  • Assists pharmacists with order entry, medication labeling, and customer service, including phone triage and issue resolution.
  • Restocks anesthesia dispensing cabinets, trays, and kits, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation.
  • Packages bulk medications correctly, maintaining controlled substance logs and submitting products for pharmacist verification.
  • Adheres to hospital and departmental policies, exercising sound judgment and effective time management to meet workload demands.
Supplemental Responsibilities:
  • Supports other technician staff during low staffing periods within training limits.
  • Answers telephone calls promptly with a professional and courteous manner.
  • Manages multiple priorities effectively.
  • Assists in training new employees and students as requested.
  • Maintains a professional appearance consistent with organizational dress code.
  • Familiar with hospital and departmental procedures and policy manuals.
  • Projects a positive and professional image for the department.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current valid State Pharmacy Technician license.
  • Obtain national certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board within one year of hire.
  • Maintain qualifications as outlined in the Pharmacy Department Technician Ladder for Technician I.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Working Conditions:
This position requires independent decision-making, the ability to prioritize tasks, and effective coordination with coworkers. Standing and walking are required during shifts. The role involves potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and complies with OSHA safety standards.
