Job Summary

Area Chief of Staff – Full‑time

Drive engagement, development, and performance of veterinary provider teams in assigned hospitals to ensure high‑quality care, operational success, and staff retention. Lead culture and delivery of quality care aligned with Banfield’s six domains: safe, effective, patient/client centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care. Partner with Practice Managers and the Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition team to recruit and develop veterinary talent.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc.
  • Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits and controlled substance inventory for relief doctors.
  • Own doctor engagement and retention, assessing risk, and creating a supportive community culture.
  • Oversee the coaching program for newly hired veterinarians to ensure productive, quality‑standard‑compliant performance.
  • Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent and serve as a brand ambassador in the local community.
  • Deliver a positive hospital experience to student externs, externship participants, and veterinary candidates.
  • Work with associate doctors to meet productivity goals through high‑quality medicine, preventive care, client experience, and team partnership.
  • Deliver veterinary operations KPIs for assigned hospitals and partner with Practice Managers to develop, execute, and revise plans to achieve targeted KPIs.
  • Ensure compliance with Banfield’s clinical essentials, government regulations, and veterinary industry standards through quality assessments, medical record reviews, audits, and patient safety event reviews.
  • Ensure hospital operations meet all regulatory requirements, including controlled substance management and radiation safety, and create timely plans to resolve identified gaps.
  • Validate required clinical skills of veterinary assistants and technicians and partner with Practice Managers to maintain appropriate development plans.
  • Champion preventive care culture by communicating, demonstrating, and validating behaviors that drive optimum wellness plan growth and retention.
  • Create a “say yes” culture to drive client access and superior service, meeting or exceeding client experience scorecard goals.
  • Responsible for timely resolution of client complaints related to medical standard of care.
  • Manage the medical equipment inventory and new equipment requests in partnership with the Director of Veterinary Quality.
  • Deliver the highest level of veterinary care to every pet, ensuring professional and ethical conduct and exceptional client experience.

Special Working Conditions

Work requires extended computer use, may exceed 40 hours per week, includes reasoning, mathematics, and language skills; ambulatory abilities (stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb) to move up to 50 pounds; good hand‑eye coordination; exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medication/controlled substances. Some travel required to assist other area hospitals and for vendor visits.

Experience, Education and/or Training

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree required. Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with all applicable state boards. Minimum 3 years of small animal medicine and surgery practice.

Benefits & Compensation

Salary range: $142,000 – $205,000 annually, dependent on experience, skill level, education, and geographic location.
