Hiring Aquatics Director for the YMCA of North Central Ohio!
Job Description
Under the direction of the VP of Quality and Impact, in cooperation with other Y staff, the Aquatics Director will manage the operations of the Aquatics Department, including but not limited to program support, staff recruitment, staff supervision, pool safety management, and training/development. Candidate will hold a high level of fiscal responsibility for the Aquatics Department. The person must demonstrate a commitment to the YMCA Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
Qualifications
- Minimum two years of aquatic management or supervisory experience.
- Experience leading and developing staff.
- Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Essential Functions
Leadership & Operations
- Direct all day-to-day operations of the aquatic department.
- Recruit, hire, onboard, train, supervise, schedule, and evaluate aquatic staff.
- Foster a positive team culture through coaching, mentoring, and regular communication.
- Ensure all aquatic programs align with YMCA standards and strategic goals.
- Maintain adequate staffing levels for all aquatic operations.
Safety & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with YMCA, American Red Cross, state, and local health department regulations.
- Maintain a safe aquatic environment through routine inspections and preventative maintenance.
- Lead emergency response procedures and conduct regular emergency action drills.
- Investigate and document all incidents and accidents.
- Maintain required safety records and certifications.
Program Development
- Develop, implement, and evaluate swim lessons, water fitness, safety programs, and specialty aquatic offerings.
- Expand participation through innovative programming and community outreach.
- Evaluate program effectiveness using participation, retention, and member feedback.
- Ensure all classes are well organized and provide high-quality experience.
Staff Development
- Train and mentor lifeguards, swim instructors, and aquatic team members.
- Conduct regular in-service trainings and performance evaluations.
- Ensure staff maintain all required certifications.
- Promote professional growth and leadership development.
Membership & Community Engagement
- Build positive relationships with members and guests.
- Address member concerns promptly and professionally.
- Promote aquatic programs and special events.
- Collaborate with schools, community organizations, and partners to increase participation.
Budget & Administration
- Develop and manage the aquatic department budget.
- Monitor revenue and expenses to meet financial goals.
- Maintain accurate payroll, scheduling, attendance, and program records.
- Recommend equipment purchases and capital improvements.
Facility Management
- Coordinate pool maintenance with maintenance staff and outside vendors.
- Monitor pool chemistry records and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Maintain aquatic equipment and ensure cleanliness of all aquatic areas.
- Ensure locker rooms and pool deck remain clean, organized, and welcoming.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift up to 50 pounds, and respond quickly to emergencies.
- Ability to work in warm, humid pool environments for extended periods.
- Ability to hear, see, and communicate effectively during emergency situations.

Required Certifications
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding (or equivalent)
- CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers
- First Aid
- Oxygen Administration
- Lifeguard Instructor (preferred or obtained within six months)
- YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer (preferred)
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) preferred
